SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 531,647, dated January 1, 1895.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWIN O. READ, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York, State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Sash-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in window catches, and it is the purpose of the improvement to provide a catch which shall combine ahigh degree of security with simple construction, and shall be capable of ready application to windows without 'marring the frame or casing.

The device is especially adapted to use with balanced windows, and an essential feature of the invention consists in equipping the catch with two arms and two bolt heads which enter separate sockets in the casing. The two arms are arranged one to either side of the sash cord, and are connected by an arched bar which spans the cord. This arrangement renders it practically impossible to jar the catch loose from its sockets, for experiment showsthat even if one of the heads could be jarred loose from thesocket, it is impracticable to simultaneously jar both heads loose, for the two heads of the catch and the two sockets therefor being at opposite sides of the sash cord and therefore some distance apart, and, also, the heads having a nice fit in the sockets, the shaking of the window sash in the effort to dislodge the catch will turn the catch a little out of true and cause one or the other of the heads to bind against the edge of its respective socket. Theaforesaid arrangement is novel in the art, and an important feature of this invention.

Referring to the drawings which accompany the specification to aid the description, Figure 1 is a representation, partly in broken lines of a window with the catch applied and locked. Fig. 2 is a perspective view on a large scale of the catch and socket plate. Figs. 3 and at are respectivelya side and a front elevation of the catch, and Fig. 5 is a top view of the same. Figs. 6 and 7 are respectively a face view and a section of the socket plate.

The drawings show the armsf, g as merely pivoted to the ears e e of the plate a, without springs, since I find that when the pintle E has anice fit in the hinge of the catch it is impossible to detach the bolt heads j, it from the sockets Z, n, however violently the sashes be shaken; but ifitis desired,-springs of any suitable construction can be combined with the armsf, g or with the hinges of the catch, to press the aforesaid bolt heads into said sockets and further resist dislodgment.
