Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWIN o. READ., or NEW YORK, N. Y.
SASH-FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 531,646, dated January 1, 1895.
Application filed'Deoember 7, 1893- Serial No. 492,983. (No model.) v
' To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN O. READ, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York, State of NewrYor'lghave invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Sash-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
My inventionl relates to improvements inV window catches, and it is the purpose of the improvement to provide a simple, cheap, and efficient catch, which shall be difficult of reach to a person attempting to open a window'surreptitiously from the outside, and yet shall be easily operated by persons in the house, and shall not mar the window casing or frame.
Referring to the drawings which accomk pany the specification to aid the description,
j between the two sashes.
Figure 1 is a perspective View of the catch in the locked position, omitting the socket or thimble which is engaged by the head of the catch. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation, as on the line a: a: of Fig. 1, but also showing the 'upper and lower sashes in broken view and the socket for therhead of the catch. Fig. 3 shows the same parts as Fig. 2, but 4the catch is represented in the open position.
The catch is applicable to those windows of which both sashes are movable, and to those of which only the lower sash is movable. The drawings show it applied to windows of the former kind.
The catch proper A, of any suitable material, as brass, and shaped as shown in the figures, isprovided with ahead a, which is adapted to enter a socket or thimble B secured in the present case to the side of the frame W of the upper sash. When only the lower sash is movable the socket B may be secured -to the bead which separates the two sashes, or to the upper sash. Said catch A has a thumb piece c, and is pivoted at its lower end in ears cl d on a plate D, which is screwed to the top of the lower sash behind the stile W of the upper sash, so as to be out of reach of any tool that may be worked up the joint The lower end of ythe catch A is provided with angled cam-surfaces, e, f, as shown, one of which bears on the spring G when the catch is engaged into its socket B and the other bears on said spring Gr when the catch is turned back, (Figs. 2 and 3.) Said cam-surface 'e is formed, as shown on the drawings, at an angle upwardly and outwardly with the standard or upright part, a2, of the catch A, so that the effect of the pressure of the spring G on said cam surface e is to vcontinually force .the standard off center outwardly and press the head a. into the socket B. This shape of said cam-surface f e effectually resists any attempt to dislodge the head afrom the socket B by jarring the sash. The plate D is beveled at d as shown, to aord play to thespring Gi. It will be manifest that the effect of said spring G is to hold the catchfirmly in the locked position, and to prevent forcing it out of the socket B by shaking the sash W or W.
As hereinbefore stated the catch A maybe employed in the case of windows whereof only the lower sash moves. The socket B will then`be set on the bead B which holds the lower sash in position.
When used with windows whereof both the upper and lower sashes move it will be apparent that the catch acts at\the same time to lock both sashes'. If desired, in all cases there may be additional thimbles at various heights to retain the lower sash in any raised position. .f v n Now, having'described my improvement, I claim as my invention- In a Window fastener, the combination of a socket, an arm provided with a head that is adapted to enter said socket--and said arm being pivoted at its lower end to a base plate, cam surfaces e f on the lower end of said arm arranged at an angle to each other, and said cam surface e also arranged at an angle upwardly and outwardly with' said arm, a flat spring fastened on said base plate and having an endadapted to be engaged by said cam surfaces e f according as the catch is in the vertical or the horizontal position respectively, and said spring being also adapted to force said arm outward from the perpendicular and press said head into said socket, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoingas my invention Ihave signed my name, in presence of two witnesses, this 21st day of November, 1893.
f BERNARD J. IsEoKE,
PATRICK A. FAY.
