L. P. PETERSON. WHIFFLETREE HOOK.
No. 531,642. Patented Jan. I, 1895.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFE CE.
LABS P. PETERSON, OF HOOPER, NEBRASKA.
' /WH|FFLETREE-HOOK..
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 531,642, dated anuary 1, 1895.
Apnlication filed $eptemherf2 1, 1894:- Serial No. 523,678- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, LARs P. PETERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hooper, in the county of Dodge and State'of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Whiffletree-Hooks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such aswill enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and-use the same.
' The present invention relates to hooks designed for whiffle-trees, and aims to provide a fastener which will hold the cockeye inplace under all conditions and prevent accidental displacement of the same under the various motions of the tugs and draft chains.
The improvement consists essentially of an outer projection extending over the space comprised between the body and bill of the hook, a disk or plate mounted upon the said projection so as to move longitudinally thereon, and a spring mounted upon the said projection and adapted to hold the disk or plate at the limit of its outward movement, the parts being constructed to close the open end of the hook and prevent the accidental displacement of the cockeye.
The improvement further consists of the details of construction and the novel features hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of the end ofa whiflletree showing the application of the invention thereto. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the improved hook.
,The letter A represents a shank which forms means of attachment between the hook B and the whiffle-tree O. This shank is adapted to enter a suitable ball provided in the end of the whiffle-tree and maybe held therein in any desired manner. In the preferable form of construction this shank is exteriorly threaded to facilitate its entrance into the ball provided for its reception in the whiffle-tree and also retain it in place therein when properly adjusted. The hook Bis disposed at right angles to the shank'and the main portion 19 extends on each side of the shank, the bill 2 being located below or to one side of a pro. longation of the said shank. Aprojection 3, preferably in line with and forming a continuation of the outer end of the shank A extends over the space provided between the body b and the bill 2. The outerend of this projection 3 is provided with an upwardly inclined lug 4, to retain in place a diskor plate d. This lug 4 is located on the side of the projection 3 opposite to that adjacent the end of'the bill 2. r The disk or plate 2 is adapted 'to engage with the end of the bill 2 and close ter normally at the limit of its outward move- I I ment and'in engagement with the end of the bill 2.
While it is preferred to have the lug 4:
slightly in incline this is not essential to the operativeness of the invention, as it may assume any desired angle, so long as it will accomplish the desired result, that is, constitute a stop to limit the outward movement of the disk or plate d. In' the preferable form of.
construction the projection 3 is circular in cross section. This is of advantage, as it admits of the disk or plate cl assuming any relative position and yet at all times engage with the end of the bill 250 as to close the space or entrance to the hook and prevent the accidentaldisplacement of the link or fastening engaged with the said hook B.
To prevent the splitting of the end of the whiffie-tree the same will be provided with a ferrulels'j in the usual manner. The body I) engages with the closed end of the ferrule and holds the latter in place upon the whiffle-tree and prevents its coming off in the event of a looseness in fit resulting from shrinkage of the wood or extension of the ferrule.
with the hook. After the said fastening has cleared the plate, the latter will spring to its normal position and close the space through which the fastening has just passed and will prevent its accidental displacement. To remove or detach the fastening from the hook, the plate will be pressed in against the tension of the spring 3, thereby providing a pas sage for the removal of the fastening from engagement with the hook B. It will be observed that the projection 3, spring 6 and plate (1 constitute a latch mechanism in connection with the hook to close the entrance thereto and retain the fastening in place when engaged with the hook B.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. The combination of a shank having at its outer end a hook disposed relatively at right angles, the bill of the hook being to one side of the plane of the shank, a projection in line and forming an integral prolongation of the shank and extending across the space provided between the body and bill of the book, a plate mounted upon the projection and adapted to engage with the end of the bill, and a spring to hold the plate at the limit of its outward movement, substantially as described, for the purpose specified.
2. The herein specified WhiffiQ-UBB hook,
comprisinga shank having the hook disposed relatively at right angles and having the bill notched and terminating in a plane wholly to one side of the prolongation of the shank, a projection rigidly secured to said hook located opposite the space between the body and bill of the hook, a disk loosely mounted upon said projection and limited in its outward movement by a stop, and a spring mounted upon the projection and adapted to hold the disk at the limit of its outward movement, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
