NECK YOKE ATTAGHMEN-T.
No. 250,919. Patented Dec. 13,1881.

ATTORNEYS;
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HARRISON HOUGH, DARLINGTON, WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND LEWIS T. LILLIE, OF SAME PLACE.
N EC K-YOKE ATTACH M ENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 250,919, dated December 13, 1881,
Application filed October 6, 1881.
T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRISON HOUGH, of Darlington, in the county of Lafayette and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Neck -Y0ke Attachments; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part ofthis specification,
in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved neck-yoke attachment. Fig. 2 is a bottomplan view of same.
My invention relates to improvements in devices for preventing; a wagon-tongue from accidentally becoming detached from the neckyoke and dropping to the ground; and it consist in the peculiar construction and arrangement of the parts, as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, a represents a wagon-tongue provided with the holdback b, both of the usual construction.
0 represents a spring safety-hook, the inner end of which is secured to the under face of the tongue, preferably by screws. The spring-hook c is provided with a slot, (1, through which the holdback passes, the tension of the spring-hook causing its hook e to bear against the tongue 0 a near its outer end.
h represents the ring of the neck-yoke, of the ordinary construction.
k represents a ring inserted in the loop of the ordinary holdback, to act as a stop for the spring safety-hook c, or prevent the safetyhook from springing down too low in case it should accidentally be caught and forced down.
(No model.)
In practice the ring of the neck-yoke is slipped on the tonguein the usual manner, when it will spring back or force down the safety- 0 book and pass behind it, and if the neck-yoke is pulled forward it wedges the hook tighter against the tongue, and the hook must be sprung back by hand in order to remove the ring of the neck-yoke. 5
By this construction it will be seen that all liability of the neck-yoke becoming detached from thetongueisobviated, theringoftheneckyokebeingpreventedfrom slippingofftheouter v end of the tongue by the hook, and prevented from slipping backward by the holdback, and that the spring safety-hook can readily be applied to a tongue with the ordinary holdback, b, in common use, by simply attachingmysafetyhookto the underface of thetongue with screws and placing a ring in the loop of the holdback, thus rendering the construction extremely simple, cheap, and effectivein preventing the dropping of the tongue, and adapting its employment to ordinary wagon-tongues. 6c
I claim as my invention- The combination, with a wagon-tongue provided with a neck-yoke ring, h, and holdback I), having ring k, of the spring-hook c, secured at its inner end to the under face ofthe tongue, and provided with a slot, d, for the passage of the holdback, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
HARRISON HOUGH.
