' -J. G. KURTZ. THILL COUPLING.
No. 433,351. Patented July 29, 1890.
a. 1 mm will! UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN G. KURTZ, OF CANAL FULTON, OHIO.
THlLL-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 433,351, dated July 29, 1890.
Application filed May 26, 1890. Serial No. 853,195 (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN C. KURTZ, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of lanal Fulton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Thin-Couplings; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
lWIy invention relates to improvements in thill-couplings, the object being to provide such a device which shall be economical in construction and efficient in use, and in which the thills will be securely held when in use without danger of accidental displacement, but which can be readily detached when required.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a thill-couplin g constructed in accordance with my invention, the thill being shown in the position it occupies when being secured to the clip. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same, the thill being shown in the position it occupies when in use.
In the said drawings, the reference-numeral 1 designates the clip, which is constructed as usual, 2 being the metal strap, which passes around the axle, 3 the bottom plate, and 4 l nuts for securing said plate, the strap which fits on the screw-threaded lugs 5 projecting from said strap. Extending forwardly from said strap are two lugs 6, which are preferably formed integral with said strap.
7 designates a spring-plate secured between one of the nuts 4 and the bottom plate 3 and extending upwardly between the lugs. These lugs at their ends are connected by a pin 8, which forms the bearing or journal for the thills, and at the point of juncture with the straps there is provided a cross-plate 9, which forms a housing for protecting the spring.
The numeral 10 designates the thills, which are connected with the shafts. These thills consist of a horizontal portion 12, to which the shafts are attached, and a curved head 13, the under side of which is formed with an inclined face 14 and a circular recess 11, within which rests the journal 8. The upper and front portion of the head is rounded, and is provided with a shoulder 15, and is then extended rearwardly and downwardly, forming a hook 16 with a rounded end 17.
The operation is as follows: When it is desired to connect the shafts with the axle, the thills to which said shafts are secured occupy the position shown in Fig. 1. The hook 16 can then be inserted between the lugs 6, with the journal 8 engaging with the recess 14. The shafts are then lowered to a horizontal position, when the rounded end of the hook will bear against the spring 7, the tension of the spring retaining the chills in proper position and preventing any rattling or wabbling thereof.
From the above it will be seen that a simple and eflicient anti-rattling coupling is provided which can be made at a comparatively small cost, and which can be connected and disconnected with ease and facility.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- In a thill-coupling, the combination, with the clip 1, having the lugs 6 and pin 8, the cross-plate 9, and the upwardly-extending spring 7, secured at its lower end to the clip, of the thill 10, having curved head 13, inclined face 14, circular recess 1%", shoulder 15, and hook 16, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own 1 have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
. JOHN G. KURTZ.
