Be it known that I, MORGAN B. MILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of `Pennsylvania, have invented oi discovered V4ertain new and useful Improvements in Washboards, of which improvements the folfnwi'ng is a specification. ,y

. Theinvention described herein relates to f` A certain improvements in protectors for washboards.

As protectors are generally constructed and attached to washboards, their sharp corners and edges render the use of the washboards y over the edge of the protector, so that water striking against the under face of the protector will be splashed against the overhanging clothes.

The object of the present invention is to provide a curved edge for the protector so as to form a comparatively broad rounding bearing for the body of the operator, and at the same time protect the clothes from contact with water splashing from the under side of the protector.

In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure l is a perspective view ot' a portion of a washboard having my improved protector applied thereto. Fig..2 is a sectional elevation of the same, the

plane of section being indicated by the line fr, nc, Fig. l; and Figs. 3, 4 and 5 are end elevations illustrating certain modications in the construction of the protector.

In the practice of my invention, the protector 1 is secured to the upper portion of the washboard in any suitable manner, as, for example, if the protectoris of the folding or swinging type, the protector is pivotally attached to the side bars 2, head piece 3, or brandboard 4.

protector and auxiliary member Will form a V6o rounded bearing or support for the body of the operator. The overhanging portion of this auxiliary member will prevent any ontward splashing of water striking against the under face of the protector. In applying the 6 5 i auxiliary` member to folding or swinging protectors, it is preferred to form it in one or two sections 6 and 7, as shown in Figs. 2, 3 and 4, one ofwhich, as 6, is pivotally connected by straps 8 to the protector while the outer 7o section '7, when used, is similarly connected tothe section 6. When only one section is used as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the straps 5 may be made sufficiently long, that their outer ends will lap over the ends of the section 6,

and be attached thereto by pins 9, which serve as pivots for the section 6, as shown' in Figs. l and 4; or the-section 6 may be movably attached to the protector by independent straps 8, as shown in Fig. 3. The second or 8o outer section 7 is connected to the inner section 6, by prolonging the straps 8, so that their ends overlap the ends o f section 7, to which they are attached bypivot pins l0, as shown in Fig. 1.

It is preferred to formthe adjacent edges of the protector and sections of the auxiliary member, the one concave and the other convex, so as to form a tight jointbetween them, while permitting freedom of movement to the sec- 9o tions. ` In Fig. 5j, the auxiliary member l1 is shown roo as formed of exible resilient material as rubber. While this construction will not afford as good a support for the body of the operator as the other forms, it will be equally efficient in preventing the splashing of Water on the clothes of the operator.

I claim herein as my inventionl. A protector for washboards having in combination therewith a movable auxiliaryv member having a yielding connection with the outer edge of the protector, substantially as set forth.

2. A protector for washboards having in combination therewith an auxiliary member formed of rigid material in one or more sections pivotally connected to the protector, substantially as set forth.

3. The combination of a double faced washboard, a protector constructed to be shifted to operative position above either face, and an auxiliary member pivotally connected to the protector and adapted to project down- Wardly when the protector is above either face of the washboard, substantially as set forth.
