SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 530,287, dated December 4, 1 894.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM W. SHOE,
a citizen of the United States, residing at.
. reference marked thereon,which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to handles or knob for stove and range doors and similar places.
The object is, to make a light, cheap and durable handle, that will at all times be cool enough to grasp with the hand.
The improvement consists in the construction and arrangement ofthe several parts as will be hereinafter described and more particularlypointed out in the claims.
The grip portion of the knob is composed of two fiat strips of sheet metal cut to the desired size and secured one across the other. After being bent or formed to the required size and shape, the four free ends of the strips are secured together by any convenient means and the middle portion of one or both of said strips provided with projecting lugs that fit up against the heated surface of the stove door and form the points of contact between the grip portion of the knob and the outer surface of the stove door. The projecting lugs are preferably formed on the middle portion of the metal strips and intogral therewith, but this portion of the knob may be made in a separate part, if desired, the several parts of the knob being held together and attached to the stove door by a bolt passing through all of them.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1, is a plan view of one of the metal strips that are used to form the knob; Fig. 2, is a sectional view through one of the strips. Fig. 3, is a sectional .view through the middle of the outer one of the metal strips. Fig. 4, isa sectional view of the completed knob attached to a section of a stove door. Fig. 5, is a view in perspective of the finished knob ready to be attached to the stove door.

a, is a tubular extension formed on the middle part of the strip A. This extension a, is longer than the extension at, and at the outer end is provided with lugs or projections a inner one fitting into the outer one, the free ends of the strips are bent up or formed into the desired shape and held together in position by a rivet passing through them. The knob is then completed and ready for attachment to the stove door by means of the bolt b, which is passed from the inside of the knob through the extensions a, a, and the stove door. When the bolt 19, is screwed up tightly the lugs or projections a, a, form the only points of contact between the gripping portion of the knob and the heated surface of the stove door. Consequently a very slight amount of heat is conducted from the stove door to the knob and a free circulation of air is obtained between the outer surface of the stove' door and the base of the knob.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. A knob for stove doors composed of the metal strips A, A, having their free ends joined together and the middle portions of said strips provided with the tubular exten sions a a, that fit each other and form the base of the knob, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a knob for stove doors, the metal strip A, having the tubular extension a, in combination with the metal strip A, having the tubular extension a, provided with the projecting lugs a the said extensions fitting each other, and the strips being bent to the desired shape and the free ends joined to gether, as shown.
3. A knob for stove doors composed of the fiat metal strips A, A, bent to shape and their free ends secured together, one of said strips having, midway between the ends thereof, thetubular extension 0., integral therewith and the other strip having therein an opening that receives the tubular extension a, substantially as shown and described.
4. A knob for stove doors composed of metal strips having their free ends joined together, and the middle portions of said strips provided with tubular extensions that fit one into the other, one of the said extensions adapted to rest against the outer surface of the door, as set forth.
5. A knob for stove doors composed of the -fiat metal strips A, A bent to shape and the free ends thereof secured together; one of said strips having midway between the ends thereof the tubular extension at, and the other strip having midway between the ends thereof a bolt hole that registers with the opening Ithro'ugh the extension or, so that the bolt securing the knob to the stove door will pass
