Description

4 To (2l/ZZ whom it Vmay concern:
UNITED STATES FREDERICK MAECHLING,
PAfrENT OFFICE. Y
AoI sr.. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
BASE-BALL BATl ing metallic weight at its handle end. e
In the drawings, Figure 1 1s a side elevation ofthe bat of my invention, showing the handle end in mid-section. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the weight attachment. Fig. 3
vis a view in mid-section of the weight attachment;
The bat ofmy invention consists of the usual wooden body 3, turned at its handle end to form the concentric spindles 4 and 5. I have rovided a ferrule 6 of the form illustrated 1n the drawings to fit over the spindles 4 and 5, providingthe necessary weight.
This ferrule 6v is cylindrical in form and provided with the concentric chambers 7 and 8. The outer end of the ferrule 6 is provided with the flange 9. Over the outer end of the ferrule 6 I have provided the circular late 10, having the opening 11 at its center, w ereby it is secured to the end of the bat by means vof a screw 12. The ferrule 6 vis thus readily v removable, so in case of the injury or destruction of the bat upon which it is being used it may be removed and replaced upon a Specification of Letters Patent.
Application tiled November 6,1905. Serial Na 286,127.
Patented March 13, 1906.
I new bat. Theferrule 6 and plate 10 have their meeting edges beveled into alinement, and the ferrule 6 is of such shape that when iitted in place the outer surface of the bat is unbroken thereby. The flan e 9 may be of various thickness and weig t, so that -a heavier or lighter ferrule may be placed upon the bat to meet the requirements of the user.
v By means of the employment of my invention the bat into which it is embodied may be balanced to meet the exact re uirements of strength and length of reach of the user. The ferrule 6 may when made of metal be heated before bein placed. in position upon the bat, so that w en shrunk by cooling it will contact closely with the spindles 4 and 5. Having thus described my Invention, what I claim as new1 and desire to have secured to me by the grant of Letters Patent, is
In a base-ball bat, the concentric spindles 4 and 5, in combination with a ferrule provided with concentric chambers adapted to Vit* over the concentric spindles, and a plate whereby the ferrule is secured to the bat, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my Witnesses ALFRED A. EICKs,
