MICHAEL MILEY, OF SHEFFIELD TOWNSI-IIP, WARREN COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA.
HAND-GRIP FOR SCYTHES.
T 0 a7? whom, it may concern Be itknown that I, MICHAEL MILEY, a citizen of the United States, residing in Sheffield township, in the county of lVarren, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hand- Grips for Scythes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improvement in hand grips for scythes of that type adapted to be readily attached to or detached from the usual scythe handles as occasion may require.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a detachable hand grip of the character described, which is composed of a minimum number of parts, is therefore sim 10 in construction and is cheap to manufacture.
.Yith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction within the scope of the claim, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is a detail elevation showing a scythe handle provided with a hand grip constructed in accordance with my invention, Fig. 2 is a top plan view of such a grip, the scythe handle being shown in section, Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view through the handle and grip, Fig. t is a plan view of the eye-bolt, Fig. 5 is a front view of the bushing.
Like reference numerals designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawing.
Referring to the drawing, 5 designates the usual scythe handle and around this handle is disposed an eye 6 of an eye-bolt 7. This bolt is formed with areduced end 8, which Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 25, 1911.
is formed at its end with left hand threads Patented (Pct. 29, 1912. Serial No. 651,155.
9. The bolt intermediate the eye and the reduced portion 8 is formed with right hand threads 10.
My invention further comprises a bushing 11, which is formed of metal and comprises a longitudinal bore 12 of a diameter slightly larger than the bolt 7 to permit the same to be freely slid t-herealong. The bushing further comprises a head 13 and a reduced tapering portion 1 1. Projecting from the head 13 is a peripheral flange 15 forming a consequent groove 16, said flange projecting over and being in spaced relation to the reduced portion 1a of said head. F ormed in the face of the head 13 opposite the reduced portion 1 1 are diametrically opposed recesses 1717 adapted to engage the eye 6 on either side of the bolt 7. The head on either side of the recesses 17 is concaved, as at 18, to snugly fit the handle 5.
Associated with the right handed threads 10 of the bolt 7 is a nut 19, said nut engaging the smaller end of the reduced portion 14 to clamp the eye 6 and the head 13 firmly to the handle.
The invention further comprises a wooden sleeve 20, which is formed with a bore 21 and a co-unterbore 22 adapted to respectively receive the reduced end 8 and the reduced portion 1 1 of the bushing 13. The inner end of the sleeve is recessed, as at 23, to receive the flange 15 of the bushing. Formed in the outer end of the sleeve is an opening 24 of a shape to receive and prevent the rotation of a nut 25, which is threaded upon the left hand threads 9 of the reduced portion 8 of said eye-bolt.
From the foregoing, it will be observed that after the bolt 7, bushing 11 and nut 19 have been secured to the handle 5, as above noted, the sleeve 20 carrying the nut 25 is rotated toward the left until the said sleeve is firmly secured in place. served that by reason of the left hand threads 9 any tendency of the sleeve 20 to become loosened during the operation of the scythe is prevented.
What is claimed is:
A hand grip for scythes comprising in combination, a threaded bolt having a handle-receiving eye formed at one end, a
It will be obbushing slidably mounted on the bolt, said i drawing said eye and bushing against the bushing including a head having its face handle. 10 formed With a pair of diametrically op- In testimony whereof, I aflix my signaposed pairs of recesses, the recesses of one ture, in presence of two Witnesses.
