UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARTIN COWLES, OF UNIONVILLE, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN' ICE-PICKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 167,745, dated September 14, 1875; application filed February 23, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARTIN COWLES, of Unionville, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ice-Picks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof,
whereby a person skilled in the art' can make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Like letters in the figures indicate the same parts.
My invention relates to that class of tools which are used to break ofi" pieces of ice, and reduce them to a proper size for'consumption in the ordinary manner.
The object of my invention is to provide a cheap tool made wholly of metal, of the proper size and weight of handle, Without resorting to the expensive method of casting the handle hollow. I
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is an exterior view of my improved ice-pick. Fig. 2 is a section through the middle of the same.
A is the blade, which is made of round steel, and sharpened in the usual manner. The upper part, within the handle, is made taper, as
shown in the section, Fig. 2, and has upon the extreme end a screw-thread to hold the top of the handle. B and 'C are the two parts of the handle. The lower part B has a hole at b cast in it, and reamed out to a proper size, so that it can be driven onto the taper part of the blade and remain fixed in its position.
The upper part C has a thread tapped into ahole in the top, and screws onto the blade and rests on the lower part around the circumference n mlapping over an inside lip on B, to form a secure and tight joint. The two parts B and C are cast in the ordinary manner in the form of cups. dle, which are useful when the tool is used as a hammer to break up ice in the hand.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- As a new article of manufacture, an ice-pick having-a hollow spheroidal-shaped handle, constructed of two parts, and having a polygonal zone formed thereon, whose angles form breaking-edges, said handle being attached to the pick, substantially as shown anddescribed.
