GLAZIERS TOOL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 529,957, dated November 27, 1894. Application filed February 13, 1894 Serial No. 500.046. (N0 model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE A. Roenns, of Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Glaziers Tools, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to glass breakers used in connection with the glaziers diamond glass cutter, in place of or as a substitute for the comb or notched or slotted glass breaker, used for breaking off a strip or marginal portion of a sheet of glass in the line of cut made by the cutter, to reduce the pane or sheet to the required dimensions.
The invention, which is applicable to most or all forms in use of glaziers cutters or combined diamond glass cutter with or without an attached comb-like glass breaker, consists in an adjustable glass breaker fixed or attached to any convenient part of the glaziers diamond glass cutter, substantially as hereinafter described, and whereby the glass may be more accurately and securely broken in the line of cut regardless of varying thickness in the sheet of glass.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 represents a side view of a glaziers diamond glass cutter, with my improved glass breaker, in one of its forms, attached. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal, mainly sectional elevation, upon the line 22 in Fig. 3, of the glass breaker detached; Fig. 3, a transverse sectional View upon the line 3-3 in Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is a partially sectional side view of a modified form of the glaziers glass cutter and glass breaker combined.
Referring in the first instance to Figs. 1, 2, and 3 of the drawings,A indicatesthe cutter head of the combined tool, provided with the usual cutting diamond or diamond point I) and with the usual hammer c. Said cutter head A is fitted to turn upon a longitudinal pin 01 projecting from the front end of the body B of the tool, and e is a set screw for holding said head in place or head and pin 01 together. D is the handle of the tool.
E is the glass breaker comprised in part of adapt the glass breaker to different thickness :of glass, by being fitted to slide by a plate 11 a fixed jaw f and an adjustable jaw g, and
capable of sliding or moving toward or from the fixed jaw f, to snugly fit over or closely grasp between the two jaws the strip of glass -to be broken; Said jaw 9 may thus be adjusted toward or from the adjacent jaw to attached to it by set screws k and fitted to slide on or along ways 8 in the glass breaker E,and said jaw g is thus operated or adj usted by an adjusting or operating thumb screw G, fitted to freely turn in the one end of the glass breaker and screwing into a hole or socket in the adjustable jaw g, said thumb screw being restrained from moving longitudinally by a locking pin Z entering an annular groove in the shank of the jaw adjusting screw G. I do not however, restrict myself to the precise construction, use or arrangement of these several details, so long as an adjustable glass breaking attachment is produced, provided with a movable or adjustable jaw.
In Fig. 4 the adjusting jaw is operated toward or from the adjacent jaw by attachment of the adjusting screw G to the front end of and in line with the handle D so as to be turned by the 'said handle, said screw being fitted to work in a screw threaded hole or socket in the adjusting jaw but held from longitudinal movement by a pin Z entering an annular groove in the shank of the screw G. In this arrangement, a set screw m is used to set the handle in position for cutting.
By means of this adjustable. glass breaker attachment to a glaziers glass cutting tool,
the glass breaker is readily adjusted to the thickness of the glass to be broken, and is made to sit close to the glass and t0 fit it so that the glass breaks true to the line of cut. The old .or ordinary comb-like glass breaker, which has its slots of various sizes, scarcely ever fits the glass closely, the glass being of various thickness, from more to less, than the thickness it is supposed to be, whereby the comb breakeris either too contracted between its slots or grasping surfaces, or too wide in others, and if too wide allows of 10st motion and hangs away from the glass, and the lower or one side of the breaker will be too far under and the upper or other side thereof too far away'from the upper edge,-and in the case of very narrow cuts, and these are the ones in which a breaker is of most use, the comb breaker is frequently of no use at all, simply because of its not fitting the glass. 0n the contrary my improved glass breaker, being adjustable, will take any thickness of the glass from the thickest to the thinnest, and will take up no more room than the old style of comb-breaker, consequently will be able to break the glass true to the line of cut.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A combined glass cutter and breaker comprising the cutter head, the body to which the head is secured, the handle connected with the opposite end of the body, screws hh extending through said body, a breaker having its body portion clamped to the cutter body by said screws and provided with alongitudinal slideway s a fixed jaw at the outer end of the slideway, a movable jaw havinga guide working in said slideway and provided with a threaded opening and the adjusting screw swiveled in the rear end of the breaker body and engaging said threaded aperture, substantially as shown and described.
2. A glass breaker for glass cutters comprising a body portion having a longitudinal slideway, a fixed jaw at one end, and a longitudinally extending swiveled screw in its opposite end, and a movablejaw provided at its rear face with arernovable guide sliding in' the said slideway and having a screw threaded bore in its outer end in which said screw works for operating the jaw, substantially as set forth.
3; A glass breaker for glaziers tools comprisingabody provided with attaching screws h h to pass through the tool and secure the breaker thereon, a longitudinal slideway in the body of the tool, fixed jaw at the outer end thereof a movable jaw having a guide working in the slideway, and provided with the screw threaded opening, and the screw G swiveled in the rear end of the said body and entering the rear end of the said threaded aperture to operate the movable jaw, substantially as set forth.
