UNITED STATES PATENT OFF CE,
ALFRED VON COTZHAUSEN, OF MILWAUKEEQWISCONSIN.
ADVERTISING 0R DISPLAY DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 529,602, dated November 20, 1894.
I Application filed August 3, 1894. Serial No. 519|36L (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALFRED VON COT-ZHAU- SEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Advertising or Display Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to advertising or display devices. v
The object of the invention is, in a ready, convenient and efficient manner, to provide for the display of goods, and, when the same have become exhausted, to restore the displaying device to the original condition'in which it was before the goods were by or in it presented.
With these objects in view, the invention consists in a stander-that is, a standard of any suitable material or shape to attract attention, the stander being provided with one or more apertures for the display of goods, having doors or valves held open by the object being displayed and capable ofclosing or being closed when the goods are removed; furthermore, in a stander provided with one or more apertures for the display of goods,
each aperture having a door or valve acting to close it when the goods are not being displayed, the said dooror valve being hinged at the upper part of the aperture and pro vided, at its lower edge, with cords, straps, ribbons, or the like, fixed, at one end, to the lower edge of the door or valve, and, at the other, to an opposite fixed portion of the stander to limit theextent of opening of the valve, act as a base when the valve is open, and permit the valve to close when removed; and finally, in a stander provided with one or more apertures for thedisplay of goods, each aperture having a door or valve acting to close or be closed when the goods are not being displayed, the said door or valve being hinged at the upper part of the aperture and provided, at its lower edge, with cords, straps, ribbons, or the like, fixed at one end to the lower edge of the door, and, at the other, to an opposite fixed portion of the stander, and there being one or more cords, ribbons, or
other suitable appliance crossing the front of the aperture to act, in connection with the door and the straps or ribbons at its lower edge, to retain the goods being displayed in position, and as a guard.
. In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and in which like letters of' reference indicate corresponding parts, Figure l-is a view in'front elevation, showing the stander with three apertures,
for display; the aperture at the left appear-.
ing with the -valve open, but with the package removed; and the .aperture at the right appearing with the valve closed;and Fig. 2-is a view in side elevation, taken from the right of Fig. 1, exhibiting the stander held in position by its support notched, within,'to perunit opening of the valve of the upper aperture, and showing the upper aperture with its package, and the right-hand closed aperture.
In the drawings, A indicates the stander, which is provided with one or more apertures, a, each having a door or valve, a hinged at its upper margin, in the nature of a clapvalve. The extent of opening of the door or valve is limited by cords, straps, ribbons, or
other flexible means, a and one or more cords, or other retaining means, a, will pass ture, will act as guards to prevent surreptitious removal of the package. Upon removal of the package, the valve will close by gravity or may easily be closed, as the flexible bottom presents no resistance, and the device may present an unbroken appearance where the goods were displayed, the valve bearing, if desired, some attractive, representation or advertisement.
meet
To hold the stander in a suitably upright position, the same may be combined witha back or support of any proper kind. The support, B, here shown, is triangular, and flexibly connected, vertically, with the back, so that it is capable of being laid with the back when the device is to be laid down or packed, as with others, for storage or shipment. The support, B,.is notched in its inner edge, to permit the opening of the valve of the upper aperture.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A stander or standard provided with one or more apertures for the display of goods, having doors or valves capable of being held open by the object under display in the aperture, and of closing when the same is removed, substantially as described.
2. A standard provided with one or more apertures for the display of goods, each aperture having a door or valve, the said door or valve being hinged at the upper part of the aperture and provided with connections apertures for the display of goods, each aperture having a door or valve hinged to the upper part of the aperture and provided, at
its lower edge, with flexible connections fixed,
at one end, to the. lower edge of the device, and, at the other, to an opposite part of the standard, and one or more cords or straps crossing the front of the aperture to act as guards, or to retain the goods being displayed in position, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
