PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY Gr. ROTH, OF MINNEA POLIS, MINNESOTA.
DISPLAY-BIN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 791,370, dated May 30, 1905. Application filed December 2, 1904. Serial No. 235.249.
To al'whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY G. ROTH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Display- Bins; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My present invention relates to display bins or cans adapted for use in stores and elsewhere to contain and'display various articles which are to be sold, and has for its obj ect to improve the same in the several particulars hereinafter noted.
The invention consists of the novel devices and combinations of devices hereinafter described, and defined in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate my invention, like characters indicate like parts throughout the several views.
Figure 1 is a view in front elevation, showing a bin designed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view showing a portion of the top plate of the bin. Fig. 3 is a section through the improved bin, taken on the line 00 00 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view of a portion of the top plate of the in, and Fig. 5 is a perspective showing in detail 'a detachable label-block.
The numeral 1 indicates the body of the bin, which, as shown, is rectangular in horizontal cross-section. Rigidly secured to the bottom of the bin is a box-like su portingbase 2, which terminates considerably short of the front of the bin, thereby leaving space for the clearance of the feet of a person standing near the bin and preventing defacing of that portion of the front of the bin which may be readily seen and which is usually ornamented or marked with certain advertisements. The top of the bin is inclined, preferably at an angle of about forty-five degrees, and is made up of afixed section 3 and a hinged section 4, which sections are united by hinge-joints 5. The upper portion of the fixed top section 3 is cut away at 6, so that samples maybe exposed to view therethrough.
closed position.
upper and lower edges of the inclined top of the bin, so that when the hinged section 4 is turned upward and backward it will coincide approximately with the fixed section 3 and cover the display-opening 6. The display frame 7 extends equally upward and down- Ward from the hinge-joints 5, and the hinged section or lid 4. is cut away to clear said display-frame both when turned downward and when turned u ward and backward.
The numera 8 indicates a block or heavy card which contains on its face the brand, price, or various other advertising matter relating to the contents of the bin. This block fits within the frame 7 and, as shown, is adapted to be held upward therein by turnbuttons 9 on the fixed top section 3.
The numeral 10 indicates a triangular sample-holder which fits as a drawer in a correspondingly-shaped seat 11, formed in the extreme upper portion of the bin below the display-opening 6. A glass pane 12 is,
as shown, secured to the under surface of the fixed top section 3 and closes the displayopening 6. The sample-holder 10 is adapted to be filled with samples of the contents of the bin, and when inserted in working position, as above described, the contents thereof will be displayed through the glass pane 12 and opening 6. ,This arrangement when the lid or hinged section 4. is closed causes the bin always to appear completely filled with the material contained in the bin. The advertising matter displayed through the display-frame 7, as has already been indicated, is always exposed to view whether the lid 4 is turned in an opened position or into a advertising matter stands in a very prominentposition, overlying the body of mate rial contained within the can, and when the lid is closed the said advertising matter is displayed adjacent to the sample contained within the holder 10.
Hitherto it has been customary to place When the lid is open, the,
the trademark, label, or advertising matter on a fixed portion of the can, with the hinged lid so arranged that it would cover up such matter when turned into an open position. It is of course very desirable to have such advertising matter or marks always exposed to view. This I accomplish by my invention and without duplication of the trade-mark or other matter.
The utilit} of the bin above described is thought to'have been made evident. It is of comparatively small cost and may be constructed either entirely of sheet metal or in part of metal and part wood. It will of course be understood that the said device is capable of modification within the scope of my invention as herein set forth and claimed.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letiters Patent of the United States, is as folows:
1. A bin or can having a top formed in part of a fixed section, and in part of a lid or hinged section, and having a display-holder centrally located with respect to the hinge of said lid, and with said lid cut away to clear said holder, both in its open and closed positions, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a can having an inclined top formed in part with a fixed upper section 3 and in part of the lid 4, hinged at 5, said section 3being cut away to afford a display-opening, of a display holder or frame rigid with respect to said section 3 and centrally located with respect to said hinge 5,
said lid 4 being cut away to clear said display-frame, both in its open and closed positions, substantially as described.
3. The combination with a bin 1 having the fixed top section 3, cut away at 6, and formed below said opening 6 with a seat 1.1., of a sample-holder 10 fitting said seat 11, a transparent plate covering said opening 6, the displayfra1ne 7 rigidly secured to said top section 3, and the lid 4 connected to said section 3 by hinges 5, located centrally of the top of the bin and of said frame 7, said lid being cut away to clear said frame 7, both in its open and closed positions, substantially as described.
4. A bin or can having a top formed in sections connected by a hinge, the one section. having a portion that extends into a clearance-space formed in the movable section, but secured against movements therewith, substantially as described.
5. A bin or can formed with an inclined top and provided in its extreme angular upper portion with a triangular sample-display compartment, and having an entrance-passage through said inclined top, below said display-compartment, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I allix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
