PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN H. DYNES, OFCLEVELAND, OHIO.
' ADVERTISING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 755,221, dated March 22, 1904. Application filed January 26, 1904. Serial'No, 190,427. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN H. DYNES, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cleveland, county of Cuyahoga, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and usefulImprovements in Advertising Devices, of which I here by declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention has especial reference to novel packages for the general distribution of sam ples or of attractive advertisements; and the objects are to provide an inclosure havingautomatically-opening walls which when released separate instantly to disclose an object, such as a figure, trademark, or other characteristic device. The entire package is designed to be of sucha form as to attract attention to itself and to the goods designed to be advertised thereby.
My invention further oonsistsin the com bination and arrangement of parts and construction of details, as hereinafter described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the advertising-package closed; and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the inner face thereof before the package has been closed, showing a figure standing upright in the center upon the bottom portion. Fig. 3 shows a slot in one of the overlapping side leaves. tening the leaves.
The exterior of the package can be covered with directions for operating the device and ornamental matter, and the interior 'should contain the advertisement printed on the in-.
ner faces of the leaves.
In the figures, 1 is the bottom of the package, and 2 represents a plural number of sides whose edges 3 are shaped to form an inclosure' when brought together. These may be curved,
Fig. 4 shows modified means for fas:-
which is secured to the middle of the bottom In order to close the package after the sample has been inclosed, the sides are-brought together and the cord is tightened in a straight,
line through the package. A knot 7 is then tied in the cord just above the last overlapping The particular attractiveness of this device is found in'the mode of its use. The device when closed is suspended in a conspicuous place, such as on the front door of a house, on
'a fence-post, or telegraph-pole, and natural curiosity will insure cutting" the cord to see it open and disclose its contents. It can be hung over a knob or nail or fastened by a pin through the'loop 13. A
The sample of the advertised goods maybe held in the hand of the figure orsupported otherwise by the contained object, as a vase or urn, or may be simply placed within the receptacle. There should be'no advertising matter on the outside of the -package.
- As shown in Fig. 3, diagonal slots 10 can be usedto insert the cord in the overlapping ends of the side leaves, sinc'e it can be done more easily than by threading the cord through small perforations. Again, in Fig. 4 a portion of the overlapping ends are provided with square holes 11, and the others with tongues 12, by means of which the parts are detachably joined together, a. supportingstring being preferably employed.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to securebyLetters Patent, is
1. In an advertising device, aplurality of side pieces and integral bottom, so arranged as to form a closed package when theadjacent edges of the sides are brought together, in
combination with perforated overlapping upper extremities for the side portions, a cord secured to the bottom and passing through the 5 perforations in the overlapping sides, and
means for retaining the sides in their closed position, substantially as described.
2. In an advertising device, in combination with side pieces shaped to form a' closed pack- 1 age when their meeting edges are brought together, and an integral bottom, of a cord secured to said bottom, overlapping upper extremities to the sides through which the cord passes, a knot on the cord above said over- I5 lapping extremities, and an image or charac-
