JUG OR JAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 529,574, dated November 20, 1894.
Application liled June 4.1894. Serial No. 513,436. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that L PAnLnn P. W1LBUR,a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Zanesville, in the county of Muskingum and State ot' Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Jugs and Jars; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ot' the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specilication.
My invention relates to earthenware jugs, jars, cr other similar vessels for containing fruit and other substances or materials, and its object is to provide an improved construction of the same by which they may be piled in the kiln for burning Without any liability of tumbling, and which after being burned may be packed for transportation so as to occupy a minimum of space, and which shall also possess superior advantages' with respect to efficiency in use.
Theinventionconsistsinthe novel construction hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a central longitudinal section of a jar constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view taken on a plane at a right angle to Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan View.
In the said drawings, the reference numeral 1 designates a jug or jar of earthen or stoneware, which is iirst molded into proper form from clay or other plastic material and subsequently burned in a kiln to harden the same. The body of the jug or jar is cylindrical in shape and at its upper end is reduced forming an annular flange 2 and an annular shoulder 3. The fiangeZ and upper part of the body are formed with Atwo diametrically opposite lugs 4 having apertures 5, and with aspout G, at one side, iiush or nearly so with the top of flange 2. These parts are all made integral or molded in one piece with Secured to the lugs 4., is a bail each other.
'7 consisting of a curved wire or metal rod, having its ends bent, at an angle forming arms or pivots which pass through the apertures or holes in said lugs.
The jug or jar is provided with a remov` able top or cover 9, provided with a knob 10 and rests upon an annular rib or flange 12, on the inside of the liange 2.
From the above description taken in connec'tion with the accompanying drawings, it will be seen that the jugs or jars after being molded from plastic material may oe piled one upon the other in a kiln for iring or burning and when completed the bail can be secured to the lugs and the jugs or jars packed for transportation, the bails resting on the shoulder 3 outside the'lange 2. By this construction a larger bail can be employed than if folded down on the inside of the iiange, thus aording a better handhold.
By providing the jar or jug with a spout at one side, instead oi' an opening in the top, inside the ange, the contents of the vessel may be more eiiectually emptied.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is As an improved article, an earthenware j ug or jar of the character described comprising the cylindrical body having a contracted upper end forming a shoulder, an upwardly extending concentric iiange, the lugs on the outside of said iiange, the annular rib at the lower inner end of said flange, and the spout located outside of said flange, all made integral with each other, the cover seated on said rib and the bail connected with said lugs and adapted to fold down outside said flange and rest upon said shoulder, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto aftixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
PARLER P. XVILBUR.
Witnesses:
