Description
(No Model.) W. E. 8: 0'. W. CLARK.
JAR, JUG, 0R CAN. No. 475,078. Patented May 17, 1892.
UNITE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM E. CLARK AND CHARLES W. CLARK, OF MOLUNEY, OHIO.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 475,078, dated May 1'7, 1892.
Application filed February 11, 1892. smart. 4.21.079. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM E. CLARK and CHARLES W. CLARK, citizens of the United States of America, residing at McLuney, in the county of Perry and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Jugs, Jars, or Cans, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
Our invention relates to improvements in jugs, jars, and cans; and one of the leadingor primary objects of our invention is to provide a jug, jar, or can which will be of uniform size throughout in order that the articles may be placed in the kiln one upon the other and to any desired height without danger of falling, and thus overcome a serious defect in producing the well-known form of jug with a top and bottom of difierent sizes.
Another object of our invention is the provision of a jug, jar, or can of uniform size throughout, having a concaved top and bottom with the top flange having lugs on the inner side serving to strengthen the flange and also serving as attaching ears or lugs for the bail or handle.
Another object of our invention is the provision of a jug, jar, or can which will be very strong and durable, inexpensive to manufacture, having ears to receive the handle or bail, so that said bail will rest within the concaved top of the article, and having suitable spouts or openings permitting the device to serve its purpose in a perfect manner, rendering the same easy to manufacture and glaze and capable of easy and safe transportation.
To attain the desired objects our invention consists of a jug, jar, or can embodying novel and improved features of construction, substantialiy as disclosed in the accompanying drawings and specification.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a jar, jug, or can constructed in accordance with and embodying our invention. Fig. 2
represents a vertical sectional view thereof. Fig. 3 represents a perspective view of the device as formed to provide a fruit-jar, and Fig. 4 represents a perspective view of the device as formed to provide an oil-can.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A designates our improved jar, jug, or can, which departing from the invention.
is preferably formed of earthenware and is of uniform size throughout, being in this instance shown as cylindrical; but it may be made of rectangular or othenform without The top and bottom of the device are concaved, providing the flange or rim B and C, which is of proper thickness to render a firm support and allow the device to be easily glazed.
' To the inner side of the flange or rim B and not projecting above the same we form the lugs or cars D, which are provided with openings E to receive the ends of the bail or handle F. This construction reinforces the rim or flange at the points where the bail is secured and allows the bail to be folded or dropped down within the concaved top in order that-the jars can be placed upon each other and easily transported; also, by arrangingthe ears within theflange and top they strengthen the flange and, being out of the way, cannot possibly be struck and knocked off, overcoming a serious defect in other jars.
\Ve provide the jars, jugs, or cans with an opening G, or with two openings H and H, or with an opening H, having a surrounding flange K, thus forming a recess L to receive a cover M. These constructions enable the device to be used as ajug, a can for oil, or a jar for fruit, as will be apparent, and the openings with flanges preferably donot proj ect above the rim of the device.
From the foregoing description and drawings it will be seen that we provide a device which will be capable of use as a jug, jar, or can and will be thoroughly effective for any of the purposes named.
It will also be understood that the improvements enable the jars, jugs, or cans to be easily and quickly manufactured and more cheaply than heretofore, and also that the articles are strong and durable, thoroughly effective for the desired purpose, and can be easily packed and transported, thus producing a jug, jar, or can possessing the desired features to commend it as practical and useful.
NVe claim as our invention 1. As a new article of manufacture, a jug, jar, or can of uniform size throughout, having a concaved top and bottom, lugs or cars formed integral with the flange in the top on the inner face and with their upper edges flush with the edge'of said flange, and a bail or handle secured to said lugs or cars and adapted to fold Within the concaved top, for
the purpose described.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a jug,
jar, or can constructed ofearthenware and uniformin size throughout, having'ac'o'ncaved fold into the Space in top, of vessel for thepurpose described.
3. As a new article of man'ufactii're, a vessel formed of earthenware and having an opening" or openin gs surrounded by flanges in i the tap thereof, a cover or covers for said openings, a "npje'ctin'g flange in'ci-osing the flanges of the opening or openings, lugs or ears formed on the inner face of the sur- I rounding flange, and a handle or bail having the ends engaging said lugs or ears, substantially as described.
4. As a new article of manufacture, a ves sel of uniform size throughout, having a concaved top and bottom, an opening or openings surrounded by a flange or flanges in the top of the vessel, a cover or covers for said openings, lugs or cars formed on the inner face of the top flange, and a bail having the ends secured to said ears, for the purpose described, c
In testimony whereof we afflx our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
