Description

WIMLIIIIIHIIIIIIIIi III! H e UNITED j STATES PATENT OFFICE,
GEORGE OWENS, OE ALBANY, NEW YORK.
MERCHANDISE-PACKAGE.
SPECFCATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 422,967, dated March '11, 1890.
Apoloation filed August 20,1886. Serial No. 211,869. (Model.)
To @ZZ whom it may camera:
Be it known that I, GEORGE OWENs,-of the city of Albany, county of Albany, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Merchandise-Packages, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of devices known as merchandise-packages; and its object is to provide merchants, and especially dealers in ice-cream, butter, duc., with the simplest and safest means ,of packing, storing, and conveying their merchandise.
My invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter particularly described, and as will be pointed out in the claim.
Accompanying and forming a part of this specification is one (l) plate of drawings containing five (5) figures illustrating; my invention, in all of which similar letters and figures refer to corresponding' parts.
Figure l is a vertical sectional view of the complete package A, formed of the jars a and l), taken on the line I l of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a plan view of one part I) of the jar. Fig. 3 is a view showing the top or bottom of the jar. Fig. 4 is a side view of one part c1, of the jar. Fig. 5 is a sectional view of one side of the package A, taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 2.
Inconstructing the two jars that comprise my package the same base and outward shape are given to both, as it is immaterial which of the jars forms the lower and which the upper portion of the completed package when in use. edges surrounding their respective mouths. In case of the jar a a horizontally-armanged flange l surrounds the lower end or rim, from the inner edges of Which'is a depending vertical flange 2, on the face of which are formed Oppositely-arranged projections 2X, having spirally-arranged tapering locking-grooves z' t', inclining downward and radially outward.
The edge that surrounds the mouth of the jar Z) slopes up from the interior of said jar and is provided with the two ribs d d, their The difference in the jars lies in the height corresponding to the depth of the grooves te' of the jar a, and the said ribs shaped and constructed to engage with and be held by said grooves.
The base c of the jar h corresponds tothe base c of the jar a, and both are furnished with the corrugations e e, that provide a grip for the hands when the package is closed or opened.
Vhen the package is to be put int-o use, the jars a and b are filled with whatever material. it is desired to pack in them. Their mouths are then placed opposite one another until the ribs d d of the jar b engage the grooves e' e' on the edge of the jar a, the smaller ends of the said ribs being at the larger openings of the said grooves. Then by giving a right-- hand turn to both jars the ribs d cl are forced vance, until further motion in-that direction is impossible, and the two jars are firmly locked together.
Vithout claiming that my invention pron vides a hermetically sealed merchandisepackage, I do assert that the contents of my improved package will be amply protected against changes of climateor atmosphere.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a two-part vessel, the part a, formed with an annular horizontal edge-flange l and inner dep ending flange 2, having oppositely-lockin g tapering grooves'i i, inclined downward and radially outward, in combination with the part b, formed with the outwardly-inclined and upwardly-extended flange formed with tapering ribs del to engage the grooves of the outer part, substantially as described, and for the purpose specified.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 16th day of August, 1886.
GEORGE OXVENS.
LEONARD PAIGE, J AMES R. DUNNTGAN.
