SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 529,422, dated November 20, I 894.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, J AMES W. SENIOR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Reading, in the county of Berks and State of Pennsyl- Vania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lanterns; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in lanterns such as are commonly used by railway conductors and brakemen, andthe object of the invention is to produce a two part lantern having the base portion carrying the burner in one piece and so constructed that the oil receptacle may be filled from the outside, when the burner is locked in place within the globe, Without necessitating the removal of the base portion, every time it is desired to fill the lamp.

A further object of the invention resides in the construction of the lantern so that the wick may be lighted without removing the globe, by inserting a match through an aperture covered by a spring actuated hinged flap.

The invention consists further in the novel construction, combination and adaptation of the parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claim.

I clearly illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawings, which with the letters of reference marked thereon form a part of this specification, and in which drawings similarletters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views, in which- Figure l is a central vertical section through` my improved lantern, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the lower portion of the lantern.

Reference now being had to the details of the construction by letter A, designates the base portion of the lantern, which has integrally carried thereon the oil receptacle B, which is elongated, a portion of which is designed to extend outside of the upright band O, the ends of the said band C being soldered to the sides of the oil receptacle, at c c, so that when the portion D, to which are fastened the guard wires d, and which engage with the base of the globe E, 'is locked to the base portion, the lamp may be filled without removing the globe or oil receptacle, at the screw capped aperture F. For locking the globe to the base, the integral lugs G slide down in 6J the bayonet slots g, and then the band carrying the lugs is partially rotated, the lugs turning in the horizontal slots h, until they come into contact with the spring bar I having an aperture c' in which the lug engages. 65

The lower edge of the portion D is recessed as seen at D', so as to allow the edge of the said portion to tit down over the oil receptacle, and to compensate for the recessed portion, a metallic strip or band J is vertically 7Y secured to the upper surface of the oil tank, and is connected to the upper ends of the band O, thus with the band making a complete circle surrounding the globe carrying part D. The hood to the lantern is Vhinged to the circular wire K, and is provided with the spring bar k designed to engage with the said circular wire when the hood is closed down thereon, and the upper edge of the globe comes in contact with a spring actuated cap 8o L seated in the hood.

About the side of the portion D as at Z is an aperture through which a lighted match may be inserted when it is desired to light the wick, and flap R is provided to cover the aperture after the lamp is lighted.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

In a lantern, the base portion carrying an 9o oil fount having a projecting portion B provided with a filling aperture, and a raised portion J integral therewith its ends connected to and forming with the part C, a continuous baud about the burner, combined with the globe carrying band having a recess D designed to lit over the said projecting portlon and held thereto, when the parts of the lantern are locked together, substantially as shown and described.
