SPAFFORD LAMBERTSON, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR OF TWO- THIRDS TO \VILLIAM I. CLEAVER AND JULIA, W. GLEAVER, BOTH OF SAME PLACE LAMP-BURNER SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 371,894, dated October 18, 1887,
(No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Smrronn W. LAM- BERTSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Burners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked the1'eon,Whicl1 form a part of this specification.
The object of this invention isto reduce the cost of construction and to provide a more durable, efficient, and convenient burner.
The invention consists in an improved lampburner, and in the arrangements and combination of parts, substantially as will be here inafter set forth, and finally embodied in theelauses of the claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which like letters indicate corresponding parts in each of the several figures, Figures 1 and 2 are central transverse sections, taken at right angles to each other, of my improved burner. Fig. 3 is a detail in plan, and Fig. 4c in side elevation, partly in section, of the extinguisher portion of said burner; and Fig. 5
is a plan view, certain parts being removed, of the bottom or base portion of said burner.
In said drawings, A indicates the cone or cap of a burner of any ordinary construction, having a slot or flame-opening, B, therein.
At the ends of said slot the cap or cone is pro vided with stop lugs or teats 0, formed integral with said cone or cap, from the metal taken from the slot,.which lugs or teats extend inwardly from the inner face of the said cap or cone, and are adapted to engage and limit the movement of a weighted flange, D, of a vertically-movable extinguisher, E, so that when said extinguisher is caused to move upwardly by means of a lever, as F, having suit-able fulcrumal bearings in the burner and having its inner end lie beneath the flange D, it cannot be thrown off the burner-tube G, but will strike the limiting teats or lugs, and not produce as much noise as if the body portion of the cap were struck, 5o
Attached to thebody portion II of the burner is a feedtube, I, bent, as at J and K, so as to extend beyond the base of the chimney, thus allowing the lamp to be filled with oil without removing said burner or said chimney The top of said feed-tube I is provided with. a cap, L, having a vent-hole, M, at or near the center thereof, so that the gas escaping from the oil will have a free passage through the tube I and vent-hole M into the open air beyond the chimney, as will be evident.
The extinguisher is formed of a tube, as N, adapted to fit easily over the burner-tube G, and is provided with a flange, D, at its lower end, to cause it to drop automatically when the lever F is released, as will be manifest. The said tubeN is provided with an outwardly projecting flange or cone-shaped points, as 0. Thus, when the said flange D is cast therearound, the latter will be held firmly in place. This process of casting a flange around the base of the extinguisher greatly reduces the expense of labor and manufacture and allows a lettered or otherwise ornamented desi go to be raised in relief or cast therein without increasing said cost of manufacture, and is preferable to soldering or brazing, as will be manifest.
Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim as new is- 1. In a lamp-burner, an extinguisher consisting of a sleeve or tube adapted to fit loosely over the burner-tube and having projections, as O, and a flange, as I), cast around said sleeve and said projections, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. In a burner, substantially as described, the combination, with the wicktnbe thereof and a flanged extinguishing-sleeve working on said tube, of a slotted cap or cone having teats or lugs O,intcgrall y formed thereon at the op- 90 posite ends of the slot therein, which extend inwardly from the inner face of said cap or cone and are adapted to limit the upward movement of the said extinguishing-s1eeve, substantially as set forth. 9 5
3. In a burner, substantially as described,
the combination, with the wick-tube thereof, In testimony that I claim the foregoin I of an extinguishingsleeve adapted to slide have hereunto set my hand this 27th day of 10 vertically on said tube and provided with pro- January, 1887.
jections O, and a flange cast around said sleeve 5 in engagement with said projections, whereby SPAFFORD LAMBERTSON' said flange is prevented from sliding vertically Witnesses: on said sleeve, said parts'being arranged and CHARLES H. PELL,
adapted to operate substantially as set forth. WM. S. CORWIN.
