Beit known that I, GUsrAvUs A. BISCHOFF, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ohicago, 1n the county of Cook and State of Illinols, have lnvented certain new and useful Improvements in Signal-Lanterns, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in lanterns, and especially to that class of lanterns which are used by conductors on railroad-trains and other railroad employs.

It consists in certain peculiarities of construction and novel arrangement of the various parts thereof, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth and specifically claimed.

The ob ect of my invention is to provide a lantern for signaling purposes in which the color of the light displayed therefrom can be readily changed to another color, and also to afford such lantern in which the construction and operation thereof shall be inexpensive, simple, and effective.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention pertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe 1t, referring to the accompanying drawings, in

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the entire lantern with the interior globe raised. Fig. 2 1s a similar View of theinterior globe. Fig. 3 is a central vertical sectional view of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 is a perspective View of the interior globe-holder.

Similar letters refer to like parts throughout the different views of the drawings.

A represents the exterior globe of my lantern, which is made of any suitable size and form, but preferably of the form shown in Fig. 1, and is protected or guarded by a wire frame B, which is placed around said globe and prevents it being broken when struck against objects, and also secures the globe in place between the top or cap of the frame 0 and the bottom thereof, which is united in the ordinary manner with the base D, which base contains a receptacle E for the oil and wick and is perforated near its bottom in the usual manner to create a draft for the flame of the lamp, and is provided with a vertical slot d, which terminates in an enlarged openng at the top and bottom e c, which openings are adapted to receive and retain the thumb-pieces F of the spring-holder G, which spring-holder is a continuous band, as shown in Fig. 4, and is surrounded by a separate spring F, which spring is provided at its free ends with projections or thumb-pieces F, as is clearly seen, and is movably secured to the band G by means of straps 2', which are secured to the band G at proper points and hold the spring F in place, as will be readily understood. On the inside of this springholder is provided female screw-threadsb for the reception of the threads g on the lower end of the interior globe H, which is made of glass of a different color from the globe A and is smaller in size, so that it may fit therein.

In carrying my invention into effect or operation, the exterior parts of the lantern are placed and secured in position in a similar manner as in ordinary lanterns. The interior globe H is then screwed into the holder G, the thumb-pieces F of the spring F are placed through the slot d, so as to extend beyond the surface of the base D of the lantern, as shown in Fig. 1,and in such a manner that they may be caught by the thumb and finger, and thus raised or lowered in the slot (1 by pressing the thumb-pieces together, thereby raising or lowering the globe around the flame and changing the color of the light emitted.

It Will be seen and understood that when it is desired to use the lantern with a white light-such as will be emitted through the globe A-the globe H is lowered by pressing the thumb-pieces F together, thus allowing them to pass down the slot d from the opening 6 to the opening 6, each of which openings permits the thumb-pieces to spring apart and retains the holder at the top or bottom, as desired.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, .is-

In a signal-lantern, the combination of the globe A with the frame, the base D, having the oil-receptacle E, the slot 01, having the enlargements c e, the interior globe H, having the screw-threads g, the spring-holder G, having screw-threads b, and the spring F, having the thumb-pieces F, all constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
