LAME
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLEs AJMCCUNE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jersey City, county of Hudson, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamps, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in amps, particularly useful for car lighting. T he object of my invention is to provide an improved inverted mantle lamp so con, structed as to uard against breakage of mantles when ighting, and also so constructed as to prevent particles of broken mantles from falling on persons who may be under the said lamp. These and other objects will be apparent from anexamination of the accompanying drawings and a reading of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a central vertical sectional view of my im'- proved lamp. Fig. 2 is a detail view also in section. I i The lamp described is designed to be sn ported from overhead and comprises suitab e supporting arms 1-l In the particular in stance, the supporting arm 1 constitutes a pipe for the gas supply. These arms l1 make suitable connection with the frame 2 of the lamp, which has a central upward pas-v sage, in this particular instance furnished by a tube-like center draft-member 3, which projects well down below the frame 2. I
4 is a globe suspended from the frame 2 and connected thereto in any desired manner, whereby it may .be readily attached or detached in the event of breakage. The globe & has a central opening directly underneath the mantle hereinafter described, said openingbeing preferably bounded by a cone shaped upwardly directed Wall et 5 is a screen carried by the globe l and covering the central opening, said screen being domed upwardly in its preferred form' Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed January 22, 1910. Serial No. 539,518.
so as to lie closely adjacent to the mantle.
PatentedjMa y 3', 1910.
6 conventionally represents the mantle mountedon a suitable holder 7-carri 'l bythe tube 8, which in turn is connected by mantle 6, whereupon said gas 1s ignitedl By this construction the'screen, 5 not-only protects the mantle from injury by the match or taper used for lighting, but it also protects any one who might be standing unenough to permit the passage of said flame) and into contact with th'evgals around the der the lamp from falling incandescent por= tions of the mantle 6, since saidm-ailtle,
should it break, will fall uponthe screen '5 and be jarred therefrom into the space around the cone 4 and within the globe 4. By'this simple expedient not only does the screen operate as a guard, but it also affords proper ventilation from below.
W'hat I claim is. In a gas lamp of the character described, a frame, an inverted burner of the incandescent mantle type carried thereby, aglobe also carriedthereby, the latter having a centra opening directly under the mantle, and
. a protecting perforated screen covering said.-
opening and arranged close to said mantle said perforated portion extending across said opening and directly under the-mantle whereby said burner maybe lighted through said screened op'ening.
