To all iolnmt '1' t '1 a y concern lie it known that l. \Vnmmar l). Chow, a citizen of the United States. residing at llast ()range. in the county oi Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamps of which the i'ollowing is a specification.
This invention relates to lamps.
()ne object is to provide a lamp embody-. ing among other characteristics the combination of gas and electric lamps wherein the color ol' the electric light is neutralized by the color of the. gas light, and by means o'ta reflector the light commingled and reflected so that in combination they produce a light of a quality approximating day light.
Another object resides in the provision of a. lamp particularly adapted for surgical use and from which a, light having a quality approximating day light is ditlused.
A still. further object is to provide a. lamp of the nature stated embodying a casing which may be readily detachablysecured-to a. gas supply pipe and including means for the support of electric light bulbs for cooperation with an ordinary gas light or a gas light provided with an incandescent mantle or burner. with means included within the casing to shield the electric light bulbs from the intense heat of the gas light.
It is a still further object of the present invention to provide a lamp including a dome-shaped reflector with a diffusing glass disposed adjacent the major end of the reflector. in combination with a gas lamp supported within the reflector and surrounded by a plurality of electric lamps so that the reddish quality of the electric. lights will neutralize the green quality in the gas light to efl'ect a neutralization the light and scatterer difl'use the same through the diffusing glass located at the major end of the reflector,
\Vith the above and other objects in view, the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more't'ully described, illustrated-in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that changes may be made in the form, proportion, size and minor details without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention. 7 i

Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawings, the reference character 10 indicates a. gas supply pipe to which may be connectedin any suitable manner an incandescent lamp A, including the mantle and the globe 12.
A supporting spider B is fitted on the gas pipe 10 immediately above the incandescent lalnp A. This spider includesa hub 13and radial arms 14. Each radial arm 14 has a notch 15 in its outer end through which notches project the vertically disposed hanger arms 16 secured at the upper ends on the arms 'Hby means of suitable fastenings 17. The hanger arms 16 support a casting (l r'or the support of a. circular series of electric lamps 18 fitted in suitable sockets in the casting and which electric lamps surround the incandescent lamp A.

which central opening the incandescent lamp A issuspended in spaced relation thereto from the gas supply pipe 10. One manner in which. the casting C may be supported by the arms 16 is to secure said casting to the lower ends of the hanger arms by means of suitable fastenings.
The spider B thus not only supports the electric lamps through the instrumentality of the casting C and the hanger arms 16, but it also supports an inclosing casing D of thin sheet metal which includes a substantially semi-spherical. portion 21 whoseminor end terminates in a neck porti0n'22. At the joint between the semi-spherical portion 21 and the neck portion 22 is a reinforcement 23 and at this reinforced joint the casing D is secured to the aforesaid hanger arms 16 by means of suitable fastenings 24. A contracted head 25 is secured to the upper end of the neck 22 and is provided with a. centor 27 and with the upper portion of the casing D so that wiring 31 may be passed through the gas pipe lIl'ClOSlIlg pipe 28 and through the hollow deflector 27 andthence through the pipe 30 for connection with the electric lamps.
A dome shaped reflector E is adapted to fit within the substantially semi-spherical shaped portion 21 of the casing D. This reflector E may consist of an outer shell 32 and an inner transparent or translucent shell composed preferably of a plurality of mirrors 33. These mirrors 33 are preferably rectangular in cross section and are secured at their abutting corners to the shell 32 through the instrumentality of bolts 34, washers 35 and nuts 36 or in any other suitable manner. The minor end of this reflector E has a central opening of substantially the diameter of the neck portion 22 of the casing D and at its minor end is supported on the aforesaid casting C. The major end of the reflector E has the shell portion 32 thereof provided with a marginal flange 37 adapted to rest on the annular ring 38 of any suitable material which is supported in a channel formed in the lower edge of the substantially semi-spherical shaped portion'21 of the casing D, as indicated at 39, this channel 39 being formed preferably by bending the edge of the portion 21 of the casing D at its outer end with theibent edge so formed as to receive between it and the annular ring 38 the edges of the lowermost mirrors 33 of the reflector E. A wired glass F closes the major ends of the casing D and the reflector E, This glass is preferably wired to reinforce the same and has its peripheral edge fitted in a grooved metallic ring 40' provided with an upstanding lug 41 with which may be engaged a screw 42 projecting through the lower edge of the casing D and through the aforesaid ring 38 so that the lug 41 resting upon the inner ends of the screw'42 supports the glass F detachably in operative position with relation to the casing and the reflector.
In order to shield the electric lamps from the intense heat of the gas light, a glass or other tubular shield 43 may be suspended from the casting-C around the incandescent lamp globe 12 and between the latter and the electric lamps 18 as clearly shown in Fig. 2. One way in which this shield 43 may be suspended is to providethe upper end of the shield 43 with an annular shoulder adapted to rest on screws 44 operating through the lowermost flange of the casting C. If desired, a. metallic, glass or other shield 45 may be fitted around the upper flange 19 of the casting C for the same purposes as that for which the shield 43 is provided. These shields 43 and 45 perform the further function of providing a passage for. the heat radiating from the lights to pass out through the opening 26 in the head portion 22 of the casing D immediately beneath the deflector 27.
The electrical and gas fluids may be regulated in any suitable manner and the means for accomplishing this purpose do not form. a material part of the present invention. It
might be noted, however, that the valve of flexible connection. 48' working over the substantial-ly semi-spherical portion 21 of the casing D, as illustrated particularly in Fig. 2.
WVhat' is claimed is:
1. In a lamp, a casing including a body portion and a neck portion, a spider located in the neck portion, hanger arms secured to the spider and extending into the body portion, a casting secured to the lower ends of the hanger arms and provided'with a central opening and a circular series of openings surrounding the central opening, a reflector supported at its upper end on said casting, the casing supporting the lower end of the reflector, an annular shielding element detachably secured to said casting and depending therefrom, and a glass detachably secured to the outer end of the body portion of the casing.
2. In a lamp, a casing, a dome shaped reflector removably mounted within the easing, means located in the reflector for the support of electric lights, the reflector having an opening therein, means for suspend.- ing a gas lamp through said opening centrally of the electric lamps, a shield between the gas light and the surrounding electric lamps, and a glass removably supported on the casing below said lamps.
3. In a lamp, a casing, a dome shaped reflector removably supported in the casing, the casing and the reflector having communicating openings forming a passage to permit escape of heat, means for suspending electric lamps in a circular series within the reflector, means for supporting a gas lamp within the reflector through said passage and centrally of the circular series ofelectric lamps, a shield arranged between the electric lamps and the gas lamps to shield the former from the heat of the latter, and a difl'using glass detachably supported at the major end of the dome shaped reflector.
4. In a lamp, a casing, a dome shaped reflector removably supported in the casing,
the reflector, means for supporting a gas lamp within the reflector through said passage and centrally of the circular series of electric lamps, and a diflusing glass detachably supported at the major end of the dome shaped reflector.
5. In a lamp, a casing, a spider located in the casing, a dome shaped reflector arranged within the casing, means connected to the casing and located to support the lower end of the reflector, a glass detachably supported on the casing at the outer end of the reflector, the reflector having an opening leadinginto the casing, means for suspending a gas lamp through the opening into the reflector, and a. plurality of electric lamps located within the casing in circular series and projecting into the reflector in surrounding relation to the gas lamp.
6. In a lamp, a casing, a spider located in the casing, a casting suspended from the spider, a dome shaped reflector suspended from the casting, means connected 'to the casing and located to support the lower end of the reflector, a glass removably mounted at the outer end of the reflector, the reflector having an opening at its inner end leading into said casing, means for suspending a gas lamp through the passage and opening into the reflector, a plurality of electric lamps connected .to said casting in circular series and projecting into the reflector, in surrounding relation to the gas lamp, and a shield arranged between the electric lamps and the gas lamp to protect the former from the heat of the latter.
7. In a lamp, a casing whose lower end is annular and open and whose upper end is provided with an opening, an annular ring secured within the casing at its lower end, a reflector supporting means located in the casing, a dome shaped reflector located within the casing and supported at its inner end against said supporting means, the said reflector supporting means having a circular series of openings therein and also a central opening within the series of openings, a gas lamp located in the casing and extending into the reflector through said central opening, a plurality of electric lamps located in the casing and extending into the reflector through said circular series of openings, and a glass detachably supported at the outer end of the reflector.
8. In a lamp, a casing whose lower end is annular and open and whose upper end is provided with an opening, an annular ring secured within the casing at its lower end,
a dome shaped reflector located within the casing and having its lower end supported on said ring, a casting located in the. casing and having a circular series of openings therein, and also a central opening within the series of openings, a gas lamp located in the casing and extending into the reflector through said central opening, a plurality of electric lamps located in the casing and extending into the reflector through said circular series of openings, a shield located within the reflector between the gas lamp and the electric lamps so as to protect the latter from the heat of the former, and a glass detachably supported within said ring.
9. In a lamp, a casing, a dome shaped reflector mounted within the casing, the casing and reflector having a communicating passage forming an outlet, means for supporting a gas lamp within the reflector through said passage, means for supporting a circular series of electric lamps within the reflector in surrounding relation to the gas lamp, and a wired glass detachably secured within the major end of the dome shaped reflector to scatter or diffuse the light reflected from the reflector and to catch and support fragments of glass in the event of breakage of parts above the wired glass.
10. In a lamp, a casing, a dome shaped reflector removably located within the casing, the casing and reflector having outlets, a diifusing glass detachably secured to the casing adjacent the major end of the reflector, means for supporting electric lamps in the reflector, and means for supporting a gas lamp in the reflector through said outlets so that the reddish quality in the electric lights will neutralize the green quality in the gas light, and whereby the neutralized light is scattered or difl'used through the diffusing glass.
11. In a lamp, a dome-shaped reflector, a
diffusing glass disposed adjacent the major end of the reflector, the minor end of the reflector having an opening therein, a gas lamp supported in the reflector through said opening and a plurality of electric lamps supported in the reflector and surrounding the gas lamp.
12. In a lamp, a dome-shaped reflector, a diffusing glass disposed adjacent the major end of the reflector, the minor end of the reflector having an opening therein, a gas lamp supported in the reflector through said opening, a plurality of electric lamps supported in the reflector and surrounding the gas lamp, and a shield betweenthe gas lamp and the electric lamps.
