Y IMPROVEMENT IN LANTERNS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 200,565, dated February 19, 1878 application filed September 28, 1877.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THEODORE B. Os- BoR E, of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lanterns; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The nature of my invention relates to lanterns; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of the wire guard for protecting the globe and the top of the lantern, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth and pointed out by the claims.

In the annexed drawing, to which reference is made, and which fully illustrates my invention, Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section, and Fig. 2 is a detail.

A represents the ordinary base of a lantern, with lamp B, constructed in any of the known and usual ways. The base A is, by means of wire guards 0, connected with a fixed'cap or frame, D, at the top, for protecting the globe E, said wire guards extending perpendicularly, or nearly so, between said parts, and connected by horizontal circular guards 0 as shown.

One of the perpendicular guards O is made in two parts, the lower part connecting the base A with the horizontal guards 0 while the upper part 0 is hinged to the upper horizontal guard, and its upper end fastened to the fixed cap or frame D by means of a hollow screw, to, or by any other suitable means that will allow the same to be attached thereto and removed therefrom, so that said guard O can be thrown down for the removal and insertion of the globe E. When the guard O is fastened to the cap or frame D it acts in the same manner as the uncut guards O, to protect the globe.

G represents the top of the lantern, said top being closed at its upper end and its upper portion perforated, substantiallyas shown. Within this top is placed a hoop, H, the lower end of which fits over the top of the globe E, and is pressed down thereon by means of a spiral spring, I).

The hoop H is at the top provided with an inwardly projecting flange, I, with central cross-bar I, and from each side of said crossbar extends an angular wing, J, which forms a wind-breaker, to prevent the wind from blowing down through the globe. Theflange, crossbar, andwind-breakers are all shown as cut of one piece of metal; but I do not confine myself to this particular construction, as they may be arranged and made in any suitable manner.

The spring I), which pressed down the hoop H,is placed looselybetween thewind-breakers and the cap of the top G, and the hoop is guided in its up-and-down movement by means of pins 01 d projecting from the inside of the top Gthrough vertical slots e e in the hoop.

By these means the globe is adjusted and held in place, the top G being also pressed up against the fixed cap or frame D, so as to hold all the parts firmly together.

The movable top G may be provided witha flange, G, as shown, to protect the top of the globe from breakage by rain.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a lantern, a movable hoop arranged within the top of the lantern, provided with one or more wind-breakers, and held down on top of the globe by means of a spring, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.

2. In a lantern, the top entirely disconnected from the wire guards, and provided with an interior movable hoop, in combination with the guards, the top G, and a fixed frame or cap attached to the upper ends of the guards, substantially as herein set forth.

3. In a lantern, the combination of the base, the stationary guards O O, the fixed cap or frame D, and the hinged guard 0 connected to said cap or frame bya screw or other suitable means, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
