NITED' STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OTTE VAN OOSTRUM, OF PORTLAND, OREGON.
GARMENT-SECURING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 529,147, dated November 13, 1894. Application filed October 14,1893. SerialNo. 488.142. (No modeLl I To all whom, it may concern..-
Be it known that I, om VAN OOSTRUM, of Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Garment-Securing Device, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to an improvement in securin g devices for the flies of trousers, vents of gloves and flaps of shoes, and has for its object to provide a novel, simple, practical and inexpensive device for the purpose mew tioned, which will be convenient to adjust, and that in series will reliably retain the trousers, gloves or shoes in closed adjustment, and which may be released by draft strain on a cord or other flexible connection that is attached to a series of similar'fastening devices.
To this end my invention consists in the construction and combination of parts, as is hereinafter described and claimed. Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a shoe having the improvement applied to secure its flap. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a glove and the improvement in place thereon. Fig. 3 is a front view in part of trousers, showing the improvement applied to close the flies of Fig. 4 is an enlarged detached outside view of the portion of the device indicated by the arrow 4 in Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view of the device complete, on the line 5-5 in Figs. 3 and 4. Fig. 6 is a horizontal sectional View of the securing device, on the line 6-6 in Fig. 5,
part being represented in dotted lines; and Fig. 7 is a detached perspective view of one portion of the improvement.
The novel securing device consists essentially of two main portions A and B that are separately shown in Figs. 6 and 7, and together in Fig. 5. The part A, represented in Figs. 4 and 6, comprises a base piece a,- that is flat and marginally circular, having a circular wall I) raised upon it concentric with its edge, and so removed from the latter that an annular flange a, is produced exterior of the wall 17, which flange is perforated at suitable has a groove formed in its upper surface at the center of width, which groove is converged from the outer end to the point where it intersects the central perforation c of the cap piece. On the outer end of the guide wing c a pointed tongue 0 is formed, which is adapted to penetrate material whereon the flange a, is secured, and by its engagement therewith When properly bent, retain the guide wing at its outer end in contact with the material, as indicated in Fig. 5.
Within the recess or chamber bounded by the wall I), a latch plate e, is placed, which consists of a substantially crescent-shaped plate, rounded on its ends and pivoted to the base piece a near one end, as indicated at e in Figs. 5 and 6. There is a limb e projected from the latch plate e near its free end, which limb is located in a slot b formed in the Wall b and movable therein a limited distance. A -U-shaped wire spring g, is coiled at one of its ends around the pintle e, whereon the latch plate 6 is pivoted, and from said pintle has one end portion bent downwardly so as to hook fast upon a shoulder formed on the edge of the latch piece, thus securing the spring in place. The other end of the bowed spring g is bent into hook form, and is made to engage with a stud g that projects from the upper side of the latch plate at the end nearest to the limb e It will be seen that the tensional force of the spring 9 will be exerted to draw the latch plate 6 into the position shown in Fig. 6, so 5 that a portion of its inner curved edge will overlap the edges of the central perforations in the cap plate and base plate of the main portion A, the degree of overlap being limited by the impinge of the limb e on the end wall of the slot within which it moves.
The part B consists of a coniform shank h,
IOO
whereon a semi-globular head 72. is formed, and the latter joining the reduced neck portion of the shank is of such a proportionate diameter, as will permit its free insertion through the central perforations in the cap plate and base piece of the main portion A of the securing device.
On the end of the shank h opposite the one having the head 71/ on it, a flat circular radial flange h is formed or secured, which has a series of small perforations 11 produced in it near the edge to facilitate the attachment of the part B on material upon which it is to be aifixed, such a connection being effected by sewing with thread, by riveting or by any other preferred means.
The main portions A of the novel securing devices are aifixed in a row at proper distances apart, either on the edge portion of trousers at the flies, or on the vents of shoes or gloves, as represented in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 of the drawings; and thelimbs e of the latch plates e, are all connected to a draft cord m, or like flexible device. The cord m, is concealed in the folds of the material composing the trousers, shoe or glove, and projects from an edge thereof, having a small button or knot m on its exposed end, so that draft strain on said end will draw all the limbs in a direction to swing the latch plates from over theperforations in the centers of the cap pla -es c and base pieces a. The parts B, for convenience, are designated locking studs, and the parts A clutch pieces. To arrange these main portions of each novel locking device for service, a number of the locking studs B, equal to the series of clutch pieces A, are arranged and secured on the flap portion of a shoe, vent portion of a glove, or fly portion of trousers, so that the studs may all be pressed into the perforations in the cap plates of the clutch pieces and be locked thereto by the latch plates, the entrance of the studs being facilitated by their loose sliding engagement first with the guide wings c on the clutch pieces A.
It will be apparent that the arrangement of the parts A, B,in series on a garment or other articles of wearing apparel mentioned, will afiord means for the quick and reliable connection of two portions of such articles of personal wear, and that the entire series of locking devices may be simultaneously released if the cord m is drawn upon near its free end.
Should it be preferred, the wing pieces 0' may be omitted from the cap plates 0, and the latter be slightly dished to guide the rounded heads of the studs B into the central perforations of said cap plates, the other parts of the device being the same as hereinbefore described.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- l. The herein described fastener, comprising separable members one of which consists of a stud and the other of a clutch piece, the clutch piece comprising a base piece having a flange projected perpendicular thereto at a distance from the edge of the base piece, so as to leave a marginal flange exteriorly of the said perpendicular flange, an d produce a central recess or chamber interiorly of the perpendicular flange, both flanges being adapted for engagement with the material to which the clutch piece is attached,a spring-pressed pivoted latch located in the said central chamber interiorly of the perpendicular flange of the base piece, and a perforated cap plate held on the said perpendicular flange ot' the base piece and adapted to engage the material on the opposite side from the base piece, substantially as described.
2. The herein described garment fastening device, comprising a series of separable members adapted to be secured to a garment, of which one member consists of a stud and the other of a clutch piece, the latter comprising a base piece having a flange projected perpendicular thereto, a perforated cap plate which rests on the said flange and is adapted to form, with the base piece, a clamp for the garment, a pintle held between the base piece and the cap plate interiorly of the flange of the base piece on which the cap plate rests, a spring pressed latch pivoted on the said pintle and provided with a lateral limb that projects to the outside of the said flange, and a releasing device connecting the limbs of the several latches of the series, substantially as described.
