IMPROVEMENT IN APPARATUS FOR SECURlNG BUTTONS T0 FABRICS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 52,5, dated February 27, 1866; antedated February 16, 1866.

To all 'whom 'it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE REI-IFUSS, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented an Improved Machine for Facilitating the Attachment of Buttons to Fabrics; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

My invention relates to that class of buttons which are secured to fabrics by means of metauldrgiylets; and myinvention consists in devices, fully described hereinafter, for forming the head on the rivet and imparting to the same a neat and regular nish.

In order to enable others to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation.

On reference to the accom pan yin g drawings, which form a part of this specication, Figure l is a sectional elevation of my machine for facilitating the attachment of buttons to fabrics; Fig. 2, a detached view drawn to an enlarged scale, and Fig. 3 an inverted plan view of Fig. 2.

A is tbeframe of the instrument, which consists of the base A and the overhangi ng arm B, and on the front end of the latter are two projections, a and I), through which passesthe rod O. A coiled spring, e, surrounds the rod O, and tends to maintain the upper end ofthe latter against the cam-shaped end of a lever', G, hung to a pin passing through two lugs,f, on the upper side of the arm B. On thefront of the projection a is a lug, g, through which passes a set-screw, 7L.

At the lower end of the rod C is a cylindri cal orifice for receiving a die, i, on the end of which are cutting-edges arranged in the form of a cross, the die being secured in its place by a set-screw,j, and on the end of the rod C, around the orifice containing the die t', is an annular projection, m.

To pins passing through lugs 7c on the base A is hung an arm, E, on the front end of which is a block or die, G', and on the upper side of the latter is a depression adapted for the reception of the end of the rod O, and on the lower side an annular lug or projection, a, the surface of which is concave, for a purpose de scribed hereinafter.

After the stem of a rivet has been introduced into the fabric the rod 0 is elevated and the fabric is brought beneath the same, so that the head of the rivet will rest on the base A directly below the end ofthe rod.

On the upper end of the rivet is placed a button, in the center of which is a concave depression corresponding with the projecting ridge m on the end of the rod O, the end of the rivet projecting slightly into an opening in the center ofthe button. The arm G is now moved so as to depress the rod O, which isn-,

thus brought against4 thebutton, the projection m litti'ngnto the depression on the face of the same, so that the center of the die and the center of the rivet will coincide with each other. As the rod Gis further depressed the button will be forced down tight onto the rivet and the cruciform end of the die will be brought against the end of the same, indenting it and iirmly securing the button to the fabric. The rod G is then again raised, and the lever E is depressed until the die G rests upon the newly-formed head of the rivet. The end of the rod is then brought against the upper side of the die, so as to force the projection a against the rivet, the concave surface of the projection imparting to the head of the rivet a neat andregular finish.

By adjusting the set-screw It the movementir ofthe arm G may be so regulated as to determine the exact amount of pressure to be applied to the head of the rivet.

I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The lever E, with its die G,in combination with the frame A and rod O, the whole being arranged and operating substantially as and for the purpose specitied.
