DEVICE FOR ATTACHING MEMBERS OF GLOVE OR OTHER FASTENINGS.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM S. RICHARD- SON, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk, and JOSIAH B. OHAsE and PORTER B. CHASE, of Newton, in the county of Middlesex,State of Massachusetts, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Devices for Attaching the Members of Glove or other Fastenings, of which the following is a full, clear, andexact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in explaining its nature.
The invention relates to a setting instrument or device for attaching to fabrics without first puncturing them or forming receiving holes therein the members of a fastening like or similar to the one described in the Patent N 0. 325,688, dated September 8, 1885. The fastening which this instrument has been devised to set has two members or parts, namely, the ball member and the socket memher, and each of these members has sections disposed upon opposite sides of the fabric united to each other and to the fabric by an eyelet or rivet which is attached to one and" extends through a perforated plate of the other part and upon the surface of whichits outer end is folded, riveted or upset. To set these members without first forming a hole in the fabric for the passage of the connecting eyelet or; rivet it is essential that the two sections or parts of each member be supported or held in opposed relation to each other, and that there be also means of properly locating or centering the eyelet or rivet and also the part having the hole through which the eyelet or rivet passes to bring the hole in a registering position in relation to the eyelet or rivet, and also in relation to an eyelet or rivet receiving or centering point and turning surface or die. We have found that in attaching the socket member of the fastening it is desirable that the eyelet or rivet section be held stationary and the socket member be moved; while with the ball member of the fastening we prefer to hold its washer or fastening plate stationary and to move the part carrying the fastening eyelet or rivet, although vge would not be understood as limititing ourselves to this especial arrangement of the parts.
Referring to the drawings Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a setting machine having the features of our invention. Fig. 2 is a view in perspective inverted and enlarged of the movable socket holder and die. Fig. 3 is a detail viewin vertical-section enlarged representing the socket holder and cap holder. Fig. 4 is a detail view in vertical section enlarged of the same parts with the cap section of a fastener in the lower and the socket section in the upper and the fabric resting upon the cap section. Fig. 5 isa view illustrating the position of the same parts upon the completion of the attachment of the two sections of the fastening to the fabric. Figs. 6 and 7 are views in perspective of the socket part of a socket member. Fig. 8 is aview in permember of the fastening; Fig. 10 is a view in vertical section of thsaid parts withthe two sections of the ball'member and material inplace' for attachment. Fig. 11 shows the position of the parts at the end of the attachment movement. Fig. 12 is a viewin perspective of the ball part of theball member of the fastening and Fig. 13 is a view of the washer or holding plate of the ball member.
In the "drawings A represents the frame of the machine. a is a plunger vertically movable in the head a by the lever 01. or in any other desired way. It carries at its lower end one of the setting instruments, whilethe other is supported byithe bed of the machine.
In Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive wehave shown the socket holder and turning die a as attached to the head and'the cap holder a as stationary.
In Figs. 9 to '11 inclusive we have represented the ball holder which is the equivalent of the cap holder as movable, 'while the equivalent of the socket holder and die for holding the other part of the ball member is represented as stationary, and we have used the same letters forindicati'ng corresponding parts of'the devices.
The socket holder and die, and the washer holder and die a each has a cavity a the reverse in shape of the lower or outer part of each. This cavity or depression surrounds a central 'post a which is about the size of the hole or entranced to the'socket or circular too recess 12 of the washer. The end a of the post is reduced in size, and forms substantially a centering point, the inclined or in-. wardly curved side of which forms a continuous turning die a. This point extends su'fliciently from the surface of the cavity or depression to bring the turning die a. slightly inside the eyelet or rivet hole a of the socket piece or washer, see Figs. 4 and 10, and the pointed end 0. extends preferably into the eyelet or rivet hole.
It is important that the socket piece or washer be centered or held so that the point of the die be centrally located in the eyelet or rivet hole. It is also important that the turning surface of the die have a continuous space between it and the edge of said eyelet or rivet hole, and the inner surface of the socket or washer immediately surrounding said hole. These features are essential because the point acts to assist in centering the rivet or eyelet as the two parts of the fastening are being brought together, and the peculiar relation of the turning surface in regard to the socket or washer serves to insure the turning of the eyelet end or rivet outwardly and upon the inner surface of the socket or outer surface of the washer, as the case may be. They are further important because the point a serves to pinch and cut or pierce the fabric to which the fastening is being applied between itself and the tip of the rivet after the manner of an ordinary punch. It will be observed that both the socket and the washer a and the turning die by two means, first, by
i the shape of the cavity or depression a and second by the post a fitting the eyelet or rivet hole a. One is practically an outer edge centering device and theother an inner centering device. As a rule we prefer to use both because the surface of the cavity a not only acts to center the piece which it holds but also to preserve and maintain its shape during its attachment; and we would here say that itis especially desirable that the post a fill the entrance a to the socket in order that its size may be maintained or may not be varied during the attaching action.
The cap or ball section holder a has in its end a depression or cavity a of a shape and size to receive and support the ball member comprising the ball, washer and eyelet or the cap section comprising the cap and eyelet or rivet, and to also act as an anvil for the head a of the eyelet or rivet, the rivet or eyelet head resting upon the face of the holder and being centered by the washer or cap attached to it. In use the socket or washer is placed in its respective holder and die by entering it upon the post a until it comes into contact with the surface of the cavity a. when'the rivet or eyelet hole a. will have been brought centrally in relation to the centering point a and turning surface a. of the die. The
7 other part of the fastening, either cap and rivet or eyelet or ball and rivet or eyelet is placed inits holder and by that act its rivet or eyelet iscentrally located or brought in line with the post a the point a being within the line of the cylindrical part of the eyelet or rivet and the turning surface being directly in line therewith, so that the edge of the rivet tube or the prongs of the rivet are caused to come into contact therewith when the two members or parts are brought forcibly together. The fabric to which the two sections of the fastening are be secured is then placed in position between the two members, see Figs. 4 and 10, and one of the members moved in relation to the fabric and the other. This causes the rivet or eyelet to form, upon pressing the fabric against the end a and die a, its own hole in the fabric, and to unite the two parts of the fastening together by the portion of the eyelet or rivet which is pressed through the fabric and upset or turned by the die upon the part or plate which surrounds the die, see Figs. 5 and 11, and the two parts of the fastening whether socket and cap or ball and washer are thus rigidly secured to the fabric without first forming a hole in it.
Where the ball member is suspended from its holder as represented in Fig. 10, we prefer to employ a spring 0 to bear lightly against the ball section to secure it in the holder with a light yielding pressure.
Having thus fully described our invention, we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. The combination in a device of the character specified of. a holder for the section of the fastener having a rivet oreyelet, said holder-provided with a concave top shaped substantially as described to support the said section and center the rivet or eyelet, with a holder and die for the other section of the fastener, having means for supporting and centering the said member and a cylindrical post provided with a cylindrical centering point and frusto-conical turning die arranged in relation to the rivet or eyelet hole of the section to be held and attached thereby as specified, and mechanism for operating the two members, or dies, one of which is stationary and the other movable, all as and for the purposes described.
2. The combination in a device of the character specified of the holder and die a having the cylindrical post a the frusto-conical turning die a and the cylindrical centering point a with the holder a having the concave centering recess a all arranged for conjoint use in the attachment of the sections of a fastening to a fabric and without first making a hole therein, asand for the purposes described.
