Nrrsn STATES PATENT v Erica,
WlCK-ADJUSTER FOR LAM P-BURNE'RS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 527,692, dated October 16,1894.
Application filed April 12, 1894. Serial No. 507,235. (No model.)
To an whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDGAR A. HUMPHREY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Columbus, in the county of Warren and State of Pennsylvania, have invented cer tain new and useful Improvements in Wick- Adjusters for Lamp-Burners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it ap-' pertains to make and use the same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a lamp-burner with effective means for raising and lowering the wick therein; and it consists of levers pivoted to a part of the lampburner and carrying plates which are adapted to clamp the wick between them so that by raising and lowering the levers the wick will be raised and lowered, the levers being movably connected to each other near their free ends and so arranged that they will hold the plates carried thereby normally away from. the wick, as will be hereinafter fully set forth and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a transverse sectional view of a lampburner, showing my improvements applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a side elevation, partly in section.
A designates the lamp-burner which is of any suitable construction having a wick-tube B. The Wick-tube is preferably made up of a single piece of sheet-metal bent or stamped to provide at its upper and lower ends passages for awick of a standard size, the intermediate portion being bulged outward and provided with vertical slots 6 to receive the wick raising and lowering device, and at one side the wick-tube is extended, at b, to form a support for the levers O O. Y
point each lever is provided with a slot 0, and through these slots pass headed pins (1 attached to plates D which lie on either side of the wick so that when the levers are manipulated the wick will be clamped between said plates. The pins 61 are preferably provided with collars interposed between the plates D and levers O, and the plates D are preferably corrugated to provide a better grasping surface.
Each lever O is provided with a headed pin a which passes through an aperture in the other lever, so that by pressing upon the heads of the pins the levers can be separated to disengage the plates from the wick, though the spring tendency of the levers is adapted to serve this purpose. 4
In operation the wick is passed through thewick-tube between the plates D D, and when it is desired to raise the wick the levers are depressed and bypressing their free ends together the wick is clamped between the plates and can be raised by raising the lovers. When pressure is released from the ends of the levers they will separate and move the plates out of contact with the wick. In lowering the wick the operation is reversed, the levers being elevated before clamping the wick and then lowered.
In case there is not sufficient resiliency to the metal to keep the plates away from the wick, or in case levers are provided which are so shaped that their free ends will not have a tendency to separate, the headedpins c are provided for this purpose, as hereinbefore described. I
I am aware that prior to my invention it has been proposed to provide a wick-tube with a serrated plate which engaged the wick for raising and lowering the same, said serrated plate being actuated by a lever, and I do not claim such construction as my invention one of the essential features of which is to provide clamping plates with means whereby they will be automatically disengaged from the wick so that they will exert pressure thereon only when raising and lowering the same, thereby not impeding the flow of oil.
claim is- 1. In combination with a wick-tube for lamp-burners, of levers O O pivotally supported and carrying plates D D which are located on either side of the wick, substantially as shown and for the purpose set forth.
Having described my invention, what I 2. In combination with a wick-tube for lamp-burners, of levers O O pivotally supported at one end, platesD D attached to the levers and located on either side of the wick, and means for separating the free ends of the levers, substantially as shown and for the purpose set forth.
3. In combination with a wick-tube for lamp-burners, of levers pivotally supported and carrying plates D D located on either side of the wick, the free ends of the levers being connected to each other so that they will move in unison, substantially as shown and for the purpose set forth.
4. In combination with a wick-tube for lamp-burners having apertures 19 b, of plates connected to pivoted levers, said levers being connected to each other by headed pins which pass through the free ends of the levers, substantially as shown and for the purpose set forth.
5. In a lamp-burner, the combination, of a wick-tube having a laterally enlarged central portion with vertical slots b, levers C C of spring metal pivotally supported at one end and bent so that their free ends will lie normally apart, and plates D D attached to the intermediate portion of the levers by pins which pass through the slots 12, said plates being located within the enlarged portion of the wick-tube on either side of the wick, substantiallyas shown and for the purpose set/forth.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EDGAR A. I-IUMPHREY.
