WICK-RAISER FOR LAM P-BURNERS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 487.076, dated November 29, 1892- Application filed March 26, 1892. Serial No. 426,548. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES PABST, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Wick-Raiser for Lamp-Burners, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of this invention is to provide a lamp-burner with a simple and cheap attachment which will afford means by its manipulation to elevate or depress a lamp-wick in a reliable manner, a further object being to improve the construction of the wick-raising device patented by me November 10, 1891, No. 402,991.

To these ends my invention consists in the construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter described and claimed.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section, of a lamp-burner, taken on the line 1 l in Fig. 2, showing the improved wick-raiser in position for service and engaging a flat wick. Fig. 2 is a side View of a lamp-burner with the chimney-support removed, the wickraiser being shown in cross-section, taken on the line 2 2 in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan view of a burner-body having a flat wick-tube, the improved wick-raiser being shown in connection therewith. Fig. 4is a vertical section of a lamp-burner body with its top removed and the wick-raiser shown engaging a flat wicktube, the line of section being indicated by the line 4 4 in Fig. 3, viewed in direction of the arrow in said figure; and Fig. 5 is a detached perspective view of the improved wickraiser.

The burner-body A may be part of alampburner of any approved form. As shown it indicates part of a lamp-burner having a fiat wick-tube B, centrally located and vertically supported within the part A. The usual conical deflector C and chimney-gallery D, with its finger-springs D, are provided; but these details of construction may be varied in form from the style shown in the drawings.

The wick-raising device E comprises two parallel limbs a, preferably formed from one piece of metal bent to produce a grip-piece b where they are folded upon each other.

At 0 the limbs a are outwardly bent, and atd are again bent forwardly, thus producing two limb extensions 0/, that are parallel with each other and properly separated to permit the introduction between them of the wickpicker prongs e e, that are preferably formed, as shown, on the end portions of a single strip of metal that is bent ate, so as to project said ends parallel and in the same direction, the part just described being attached to the extensions Ct by a rivet e or other means.

So far as described the wick raising or adjusting device is similar to that shown in my Patent No. 462,991. In use, however, it has been found desirable to provide a more positive interlock of the limbs a with the lampburner body, and to this end additional features of construction have been added which will be described.

As indicated in the drawings, the limbs a are introduced through a slot in the burnerbody opposite the wick-tube vertical slots g, so that the picker-prongs e may be inserted through a wick F and through opposite pairs of said slots, as indicated in Figs. 1 and 3.

After the Wick-elevating device is introduced within the rectangular aperture h, as shown, the limbs or are joined together and held in parallel planes by a spacing-washer'i and a rivet inserted through the limbs and washer which prevents lateral springing of the limbs.

Preferably the prongs e are made to loosely embrace two parallel vertical wing projections f, that are formed on a vertical air-tubef of ordinary form, which wings serve as guides for the prongs to prevent lateral diplacement when the wick-raiser is manipulated.

Upon the side of one limb or there is a lock ing-dog m, pivoted by its outer end, as shown at m, which will permit it to be lifted with one finger of the operator while the wick-raiser is being manipulated to adjust the wick F. It will be seen that there is a hook-likeshoulder m formed on the dog m between a fingerknob m and the inner end of the dog, which shoulder is adapted to interlock with the inner surface of the burner-body A at the lower edge of the slot or aperture h when the dog is allowed to drop, actuated by its gravity.

In use the operator grips the outer end portion of the joined limbs a and pushes them inwardly, and when fully inserted the dogm v is allowed to drop or may be pressed upon to cause its hook-shoulder to engage the inner surface of the burner-body A below the lower edge of the slot or aperture h, as before mentioned. The wick-raiser is now vibrated to elevate or depress the wick, as may be required, the hook-shoulder of the dog preventing outward movement of the limbs a while itis interlocked. When it is desired to shift the limbs a so as to take a fresh hold on the wick F, the dog m is lifted by pressure below on the projecting portion m which will release the hook-shoulder m and permit a free longitudinal movementof the limbs a in the aperture h.

Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A wick-raiser for lamp-burners, comprising two parallel limbs, picker-prongs projecting from one end of said limbs, and a locking-dog pivoted on one of said limbs and adapted to engage with the burner-body, substantially as described.

A wick-raiser for lamp-burners, comprising two parallel integral limbs held spaced apart by a washer, two parallel picker-points on the ends of said limbs adapted to pass through slots in the wick-tube, and a pivoted dog on one of said limbs, having a hookshoulder adapted to interlock with the edge of an aperture in the burner-body, through which the limbs and dog are inserted, substantially as described.

3. The combination, with a burner-body having a vertical side aperture and a vertically-slotted wick-tube, of a wick-raiser comprising two parallel limbs held spaced apart by a washer and rivet and adapted to reciprocate and rock in the aperture in the burnerbody, two picker-prongs on the inner ends of the limbs entering the slots in the wick-tube, and a locking-dog pivoted at one end to one of the limbs of the wick-raiser and having ahook-shoulder thereon adapted to engage the 1 lower edge of the slot in the burner-body and provided with a finger-knob, substantially as described.
