SHOW CASE AND BARREL COVER.
No. 527,323. Patented Oct. 9, 1894;,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY DAUB AND DAVID J. REX, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
SHOW-CASE AND BARREL-COVER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 527,323, dated. October 9, 1894.
Application filed July 9,1894. Serial No. 516,986. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, HENRY DAUB and DAVID J REX, citizens of the United States, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Show-Case and Barrel-Cover; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in a combined show case and barrel cover.
The object of our invention is to provide a cover for barrels, boxes and other receptacles, in combination with a show-case, whereby the said cover will keep out the dirt, dust, &c., and at the same time allow samples of the contents of the receptacle or other samples, to be displayed. With this end in view we provide a simple but efficient cover and display case made of wood, tin or other suitable material, made in various shapes and sizes, depending on the character of the receptacle containing the goods.
our invention is intended chiefly for use in stores where goods are sold directly from a barrel, box or other receptacle, such as groceries and confectionery. from which goods it is important to keep dirt, dust and flies.
Our invention consists, generally stated, of a cover, the base of which is usually provided with an opening, and to which base is attached in a suitable manner a frame, in combination with a show-case hinged to said frame, all as more fully hereinafter described and particularly claimed.
Our invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in, which- Figure 1 is a front view of show-case and cover as applied to a barrel; Fig. 2, a cross section of same showing case raised; Fig. 3, a perspective view of case and cover with case in its normallposition, when the goods receptacle is closed, and Fig. 4, a perspective view of the same showing case raised when the receptacle is open.
Referring to the drawings, A is the base of the cover, made in any desired size and shape, having depending flanges, a, which fit over the edges of the receptacle on which the cover is applied. B is an opening in the base the purpose of which is to enable one to get at the contents of the barrel or box without removing the cover therefrom. Attached to the base, A, and extending upwardly therefrom is a frame, 0, shown in the drawings as having two closed triangular sides, I) and c, and a slanting closed back or top part, d; but this frame may be varied without departing from the spirit of our invention. To the top, (1, of the frame 0, is hinged at d, the ridge of the frame, a show-case, D, in such a manner that when the case is in its normal position, as shown in Fig. 3, it will cover the opening in the base, A, and thus entirely protect the goods in the barrel. The case, D, is provided with a glass cover, D, hinged to one side of the body of the case. This tilting or rocking case is so hung or balanced on the frame that it is very easily raised or lowered and will remain either up or down, after being once put in the desired position, without the aid of anything to keep it in place.
The operation of our invention may be described as follows: The display-case being filled with samples of the contents of the re ceptacle, the combined show-case and cover is put on the barrel .or other article, with the case in its normal position, that is to say, the case rests partly on the frame, 0, and partly on the base, A, and covers the opening, B, in the base, and while in this position it is impossible for foreign matter to enter the receptacle. When it is desired to remove a part of the goods the rocking-case is lifted from the base and turned so as to rest on the top, (1, of the frame, 0, thus enabling one to readily remove the goods through the opening in the base.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim is- I. In combination with a receptacle for goods, a cover for such receptacle, a frame mounted on said cover and a display-case, provided with a transparent cover, hinged to rock in said frame.
2. A combined show-case and cover, consisting of the base or cover part, having an opening therein, a frame, 0, mounted on said base,
10 whereby said show-case is adapted to rest 'on said frame to close the opening in said base and to be turned on said frame to uncover said opening, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY DAUB. DAVID J. REX.
