' -NiT-ED STATES lPerri-31m @Fisici-3f@ JEREMIAH CLAYPOOL, OF MARSHALL, ILLINOIS.
sAsH-HQLDER.
' SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 527,137, dated October 9, 1894. Application filed February V8, 1894. Serial No. 4991503- (NO IDOBL) To all whom/it may concern v Be it known that I, J EREMIAn CLAYPOOL, a citizen of the UnitedStates, residing at Marshall, in the county of Clark and State ofv Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window or-Sa'sh-Locks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled inv the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to theletters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improved sash lock, in which an eccentrically suspended cylinder is embedded in the window-frame,
immediately behind the edge of the windowsash, and in'such position that the cylinder may be thrown against the edge of the Window-sash; in which position it will bind, or hold the sash; or away from the sash, thus liberating the sash.
-The objects of my invention are, tirst, to provide a lock which will be strong, durable and cheap; second, to provide a lock which will do away with the necessity of window cords and weights; third, to provide Aa` lock whose efficiency will not be aiected by the wearing away of the Iwindow-sash, shrinkage, change of temperature, &c., and last to pro-v vide a lock which can be easily and conveniently operated by any one, andone which can not get out of order. I attain these objects by means of the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure -1, is a perspective view of an upper corner of a window frame and sash, portions of each of which are cut away, for the purpose of showing the lock in position. Fig. 2 is a detailed'view in perspective, of the lock itself and of its parts. y
Similar letters of reference refer to similar parts throughout both views.
Fig. 2 of the drawings,- represents a lock which consists of a cylinder a, of brass, iron or any other suitable material, a strong metal shaft b and a handle,^or knob h. About two thirds of the longitudinal section of the cylinder a., is hollow, and the remaining third section is solid, as shown in Fig. 2.
The lettere indicates a square groove which iscutintothe face of the inner wall of the solid section ofthe cylinder, parallel with the v axis ofthe cylinderand for the purpose of The hollow portion of the cylinder is filled up with wood,` or any other suitable light material, which I indicate bythe letter d. Between lthe filling d and the inner face of the Solid portion bf the cylinder, indicated by 0, I placca steel plate fr', which clamps thev shaft b, tightly Within the groove c, andv prevents the wood or other tllingd from wearing away and becoming loosened. Thus the cylinder a is mounted upon itsshaft eccentrically and acts as an eccentric. The end e of the shaft b, which passes through the cylinder a, protrudes from and `beyond the end of the same, and said protruding end is rounded and rests in a bearing within the window-frame. A short section of the other endof the shaft b, is bent at a point indicated by the .letter b', at a right angle to the shaft proper, in order that it may inserted within a slot, or groove f which is out into the face g of the base ofthe knob, or handle h.
To further secure the handle, or knob h, to the shaft b I solder the same into the groove f.
The handle, or knob h, which may be of any convenient material and form, serves as a balance to the eccentric cylinder, as well as a means of operating the invention, as hereinafter fully described and explained.
To attach my invention toa window, I simply cut'a recess in the window-frame, large enough to receive the cylinder a, and to give the same,-room to revolve in. vSaid recess being immediately behind the edge ofthe window sash, and invsuch close proximity that vwhen the larger side of the eccentric cylinder a, is turned toward the sash, it will bind against the same. I then drill a straight passage, through the window-frame to and vbeyond the recess in order that the shaft bmay be passed through said passage, and lind a bearing for its protruding end e, in the inner part of 'the window-frame.
Having thus prepared the window-frame,-
I place the eccentric cylinder a, within the recess m; in such position,` that the groove c, which passes through the cylinder a, will form, with the passage drilled through the window- IOO frame, a continuous passaage, through which I pass theshaft b. Thus the cylinder issus-v pended within the recess m, and is easily revolved to any required position by means of the handle h, which is placed upon the outer end of the shaft b. Y u, l
I find it most convenient, in attaching my lock to a window, to so hang the eccentric cylinder, that the larger side of the same, will naturally hang upon the side of the recess opposite from the edge of the windowsash; and to soadjust the shaft b, that when it is driven firmly into and through the cylinder, the bent end of the same' will natrirally stand perpendicularly upward from l of friction with the same.
To lower the sash it is only necessary to 'turn the knob h away from the Window, 3o thereby relieving the pressure'from the edge of the sash.
'Yhen the sash is down,or closed, I turn the knob h away from the window, thus throwing the larger. side of the `eccentric cylinder below centers, and against the edge of the sash, in which position any effort to raise the sash, will by friction, tend to turn the cylinder upward and toward the sash, thus locking' the sash more firmly.
vHaving described my invention and its use, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- Y The combination, in a window-sash and windowframe, with a, cyli-ndera, suspended '45 eccentrically within a recess ai, said cylinder being provided with a wood, or other suitable fillinf'.: d, the metallic' plate i, and the groove c, a shaft b and a handle, or knob z; all substantially as and for the purposes set; forth and described.
In testimony'r that I claim the foregoing as my own I aiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.`
JEREMIAl-I CLAYPOOL.
