SPECIFICATION forming part of-Letter's Patent No. 526,929, dated October 2,1894. Application filed November 1893.; s un No. 490,531. (No model.)

5 of Vermont, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Fans; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which [0 it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to means for operating a fan for a bed or to actuate a cradle or other analogous device, and has for its object to provide a simple and effective con-' r 5 struction of parts which can be readily applied in operative position, convenient in use and cheaply manufactured.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of the construction and arrangement of the several parts, which will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.

Referring to the drawings, Figs. 1 and 2, the numeral 1 designates any suitable form of bed having a head board 2 to the center of the rear portion of which is secured an upright 8 supporting a bracket 4 having a 4.0 on the said head 5 is avertical member 7 of a rod 8 which is also formed with a horizontal member 9 having eyes 10 depending from the under side thereof. The said vertical member 7 of the rod can be adjusted freely in the head 5 and held inits adjusted position by the clamping screw 6 and it will be understood that the. said vertical member, as well as the horizontal member of the said rod may be made any suitable length to suit different Movably attached to the eyes 10 by means of other eyes 11 is a fan 12 consisting of an elongated sheet, or strip of mateand so mounted-as to swing laterally in eitherv direction. To the said eye 15 is movably attached the inner end of a section 16 of a telescoping bar or pitman 17, which is also provided with a second section 18, the said parts being supplied with band guides 19, one of which carries a set screw 20 to hold the said sections in adjusted position. .lhe clamp 13 is made vertically adjustable in order to increase or decrease the amount of air,-

which is regulated by moving the clamp either upwardly or downwardly, and the bar or pitman 17 is made of telescopic sections in order to accommodate the varying widths of head boards. The outer end of the outer section of the bar or pitman is movably attached to the upper end of a lever 21, which extends upwardly from a motor 22 of a noiseless character, and which forms the subject matter of another application filed simultaneously herewith. This motor is so arranged as to be wound by a crank handle 23 and to run for a considerable length of time after the manner of a clock, and said motor is held in position by suitable angle irons 24, attached to the head board at one side while the bar or pitman 17 extends and moves over the outer surface of the head board without touching the latter, or the said motor can be attached in any other suitable manner to accommodate the position of the several parts, and maintain the bar or pitman 17 normally in a level position. It will also be understood that when thefan is not in use, the clamping screw 6 may be loosened, and said fan turned to lie closely against the head board/and thereby avoid forming an obstruction in making up the bed or for any other purpose, the bracket 4 extending over the headboard a sufficient distance to permit this action.

The principal use of the fan heretofore set forth, will be in connection with sick beds, where it can be conviently used to keep the patient cool by an easy circulation of air, as will be readilyappreciated.

It will be obviously apparent that many minor changes in the construction and arrangement of the several parts might be made and substituted for those shown and described, Without in the least departing from the nature or spirit of the invention.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. The combination with a bed of a verti cally adjustable rod adapted to be turned in a horizontal plane to one side or the other and comprising the horizontal member and vertical member arranged at a right angle to the inner end thereof, a bracket in which said vertical member is adj ustably mounted, a fan movably attached to said horizontal member, a clamp attached to the inner edge of said fan and vertically adjustable thereon, an adjustable bar or pitman attached to the said clamp, and operating mechanism attached to the outer end of said bar or pitman for operating the fan, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

2. In a device of the character set forth,

the combination with a support of a vertical and horizontally adjusted rod,a flat vertically disposed fan attached to said rod, a clamp attached to the inner edge of the said fan and vertically adjustable thereon and an adjustable bar or pitman attached to said clamp, substantially as and for the purposes specified.

3. In a device of the character set forth, the combination of a fan, a clamp attached to the inner edge thereof and vertically adjustable thereon, and an adjustable bar or pitman attached to the said clamp, substantially as described.
