INVALIDS BED.
Specification of Letters Patent.
7 Patented June 6, 1916.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HARVEY WV. Benson, a citizen of the United States, residing at Monticello, in the county of Lawrence and State of Mississippi, have invented new and useful Improvements in Invalids Beds, of which the following is a specification.
This invention contemplates the provision of a bed attachment in the nature of an invalid support, embodying among other features a frame adjustably mounted between the side rails of the bed, and adapted to be elevated at diflerent inclinations with respect to the bed, with a view of comfortably supporting an invalid in upright position when desired.
In carrying out my invention I aim to provide a device of this character, which when associated with the bed forms a permanent part thereof, being adapted to lie in the plane with the side rails of the bed when in normal or folded position, to allow the mattress or the like to be properly positioned.
The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood when the following description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings, the invention residing in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts asdefined in the appended claim.
In the drawings forming part of this specification like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views and wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bed showing my attachment associated therewith. Fig. 2 is an enlarged side elevation showing the back rest and mattress in elevated position. Fig. 3 is a top plan view. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view.
Referring more particularly to the drawings a bed is shown, including the head board 5 and foot board 6 which are connected by means of the side rails 7 and 8 respectively. Depending from the side rails at a point approximately midmay of their length are the bearings 9 in which is journaled the back rest.
The back rest may be constructed from any suitable material and of any desired configuration, but preferably consists of a substantially rectangular frame 10, the upper and lower bars 11 and 12 respectively of which support the members 13. The
lower bar 12 extends a slight distance beyond the opposite sides of the frame and has its opposite ends journaled in the bearings 9, whereby the frame is mounted for vertical adjustment in the manner to be presently described. Secured to the lower bar 12 is a yoke 14, the latter being slightly inclined downwardly with respect to the bar, and has pivotally associated therewith in any suitable manner the movable rod 15 which projects rearwardly' from the yoke and rests upon a fixed transversely disposed 1 bar 16 connected with the side rails of the bed immediately adjacent the head board. Fulcrumed upon the bar 16 at a point in its length is an operating lever 17, having one end operatively connected with the rod 15 to impart thereto a reciprocato-ry movement for the purpose of raising or lowering the back rest 10 as the occasion may require.
The operating lever 17 is adapted to swing in a horizontal plane and extends laterally from the rod 15 toward and beyond the side rail 8 of the bed. Fixed to the under surface of the side rail 7 is a rack bar 18, with which the operating lever 17 is adapted to be associated for the purpose of holding the latter in its adjusted position, and the back rest 10 in elevated position. Manifestly by reason of this construction the back rest 10 may be elevated to difi'erent degrees of inclination by moving the operating lever 17 forwardly the required distance, which operation moves the rod 15 in a rearward direction thereby elevating the back rest 10 as will be readilyunderstood. I
With a bed of this construction a sectional mattress 19 is employed, so that when the back rest is adjusted to elevated position the adjacent section of the mattress is simultaneously adjusted therewith as clearly shown in Fig. 2. When it is not desired to use the back rest 10 the latter may be readily and easily lowered by disengaging the operating lever 17' from the rack bar 18,
.whereupon the vframe 10 rests upon the transverse bar16. In its normal or folded position the frame lies in the plane with the side rails of the bed so that the mattress, sprin s Or the like may be properly positioned upon the bed without causing any humps in the'mattress to the discomfort of the patient. The device is extremely simple in its construction and may be easily manipulated for the purpose intended.
It is believed that from the foregoing de scription the nature and advantages of the invention will be readily understood, and while I have shown what I now consider one embodiment of the invention, I desire to have it understood that I do not limit myself to the precise construction illustrated, as various changes may be resorted to when desired as fall within the scope of the appended claim.
\Vhat is claimed is In a bed construction, a frame having one end pivotally supported between the side rails thereof, a fixed transverse bar fitted between said rails and forming a support for the opposite end of the frame, a rod having one end pivotally connected with the forward end of the frame, an operating 1ever fulcrumed on said bar and pivotally associated with the opposite end of said rod for raising and lowering said frame, and means for holding said operating lever fixed in adjusted position.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
