UNITED STATES PATENT ,OFFICE.
JAMES L. HARRIS, OF BURLINGTON, IOWA, ASSIGNOR TO E. G. KEMPER, OF SAME PLACE.
GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 526,312, dated September 18,1894.
Application filed February 19, 1894- Serial No. 500.701. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES L. HARRIs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Burlington, in the county of Des Moines and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates; and. I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in gates, and has special reference to a novel and improved form of hanger and support or hinge, and the object of the invention is the provision of a combined hanger and hinge which will be of simple, durable and inexpensive construction and which will prove a I practical and useful improvement.
The invention consists in the combination with a gate of a hanger of an improved construction which will permit the gate to be opened by sliding or by swinging the same upon the hanger as will appear from the following disclosure.
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a gate provided with my improvement, the gate being shown closed. Fig. 2 represents a similar View with the gate shown open. Fig. 3 represents a side elevation of the hanger, and Fig. 4 represents a similar view of a modified form of the hanger.
In the drawings A designates the gate posts and B designates the gate, which in this instance is of the well known form although any construction of gate may be used.
To one of the gate posts are secured the eyes or bearings-O, for the vertical rod D, on which are mounted the eyes E, of the tri-angular crane or hanger F. This crane or hanger is made of gas pipe and consists of the upper horizontal section F, the lower inclined section F and the adjustable elbow F the purpose of which is to adjust the inclined section with reference to the horizontal section to raise or lower the gate, as will be readily understood.
' said eyes having the stems, and the pivot rod The upper or, horizontal section of the hanger is provided with the elbow and thls elbow has its free end provided with screw threads on which is placed an adjusting nut. The free end of the elbow normally fits in the upper end of the inclined section and the nut can be moved upon the threaded end of the section and bears upon the inclined section and can be adjusted to any distance on the threaded end of the section to-raise or lower the hanger and thus adjust it as desired.
The gate is provided with a roller G on which it travels upon the crane or hanger or the hanger may be provided with a roller H as shown.
It will be seen thatI provide a hanger which will permit the gate to be opened by sliding or swinging as will be seen and that the hanger can be easily and cheaply applied and is a simple, durableand entirely practical and useful improvement.
I claim 1. The combination with the gate posts and the gate, of the hanger consisting of the horizontal and inclined sections having their inner ends open, the adjustable elbow connected to the outer ends ofthe horizontal and inclined sections, the eyes having the stems or extensions fitting in said inner ends, the eyes secured to the post and arranged in line with passing through said eyes.
2. The combination with the gate posts and gate, of the hanger having the horizontal upper section provided with the elbow having the screw threads, the inclined section having its upper end receiving said threaded end of the upper section and the adjusting nut on the threaded end of the elbow for shortening or lengthening the elbow and effecting the raising or lowering of the gate.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of witnesses.
JAMES L. HARRIS.
Witnesses:
