To all 11171/0177, t may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL J. FULLER, a citizen of tbe United States, residing at Ox-` ford, in the county of Benton, State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates; and I do hereby declare the following to'be a full, clear, and exact description ot the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention rela-tes to what are commonly known as farm-gates, although it will be understood that the gate may be used wherever it is practicable, the object of the invention being to provide a construction wherein the usual hinges will be dispensed with and the gate instead of swinging into and out of closed position may be slid longitudinally to expose a greater or lesser portion ot the gate-opening.
A further object ot' the invention is to provide a construction which will be cheap and simple and in which the gate will be held securely against sagging at different points of its sliding movement.
In the drawings forming a portion of this specification, and in which like numerals ot' reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is an elevation showing in closed position a gate embodying the present invention; Fig. 2 is a perspective viewot the hanger for the gate. Fig. 3 is a vertical` section through one of the supplemental posts or supports of the gate.
Referring now to the drawings, there is shown a gate embodying the present invenand lower members 5 and t5, consisting of sections of pipe of suitable lengths anddiameters, connected at their ends with the vertical pipe-sections 7 and 8 by means of elbows 9. There is thus provided a rectangular frame, and in this frame is a llling of woven wire 10.
There are illustrated two gate-posts 11 and 12, of which the latter is the latch-post, while the former takes the place of the ordinary hinge-post. The gate is hung from thepost 11 by means of ahanger, comprising vertical bars 13 and 14, having their upper end p0rtions 15 and 16 converged Vand crossed and At the point of crossing of bent rearwardly.

Connected to the vertical bars 13 and 14 are the rectangular frames 18 and 19, these frames being secured to the inner sides of the bars 13 and 14, adjacent to the upper and lower end portions thereof, respectively, said frames being horizontal, so that they lie one directly above the other. The frames rest with their rear sides against the post 1l, to
which latter theyare attached bylag-screws 20.
Within the upper frame 18 are mounted rollers 2l, having grooved peripheries in which is received the top member 5 of the gate, the lower member (i of the gate resting in the grooved peripheries of the rollers 22, which are mounted in the lower frame 20, the rollers being disposed with their axes at the intersection of the bar's 13 and 14 with their respective frames 18 and 19.
With this arrangement it will be noted that there are two vertical pairs of rollers, which are spaced laterally one from the other, so that when the major portion of the gate projects from one side of the post 11 the gate will rest upon one ot' the lower rollers and will press upwardly against the diametrically opposite roller, while when the gate projects with its major portion at the other side of the post the other lower roller and the other upper roller will be subjected to strain. To relieve the rollers in part of these strains, supplemental supports 23 and 24E are provided, the former being disposed between the posts 11 and 12, while the latter is at the opposite side of the post 11. Each of these supplemental supports consists of a short post hav ing a recess or slot 25 in its upper end, in whichis rgtatably mounted a roller 26.
With the disposition of the supplemental supports illustrated, the gate rests upon the support 23 when it isclosed and upon the support 24: Vwhen it is open, the gate continuing to rest upon the support 23 until after it has been slid half-way open, and it will be noted that the gate will pass onto the support 24 before it passes entirely from the support 23. With the present construction it will be seen that there is presented a gate which will be held with rigidity against lateral 1novo ment at all points of its adjustment, while the gate may be easily and quickly opened to its fullest extent or part way, as may be desired, and may be as readily closed, it being understood that inl practice modifications of the specific construction shown may be made and that any suitable materials and proportions may be used for the various parts Withoutdeparting from the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is- 1. The combination with a post, of a hanger secured to the post and including laterallyspaced Vertical rods and vertically-spaced horizontal frames secured to the rods and grooved rollers rotatably mounted in the frames, and a gate-frame in rolling contact with both sets of rollers.
2. The combination with a post, of a hanger including laterally-spaced vertical rods having their upper end portions crossed and secured to the post,vertical1yspaced horizontal frames secured to the rods, a pair of grooved rollers rotatably mounted in each of the frames and spaced transversely of the post, a gate disposed between and in rolling contact with the pairs of rollers, and a support disposed at each side of the post and having a roller at its upper end, said supports being spaced apart a distance less than the length of the gate, to receive and support the latter simultaneously.
