Description

NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE E. THOMPSON, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNEOTIOUT.
IMPROVED DOOR-FASTENER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 52,469, dated February 6, 1866.
To all whom tt mayconcem:
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. THOMPSON, of New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State ot' (Jonnectieut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Safety-Fasteners for Doors; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, elear, and exact description of the same, reference being made to the annexed drawings, made part of this specification, in which the apparatus is shown in perspective.
Three plates, A, B, and O, are pivoted together, B and O turning on the pivot'. These plates are notched near their upper end, as shown.
The plate A is made having its lower edge finished to a sharp edge and bent at right angles to the plates B and O and from them. On the same side of A toward which this sharp edge is bent is a stud, to which is hinged the bar D, turning on its hinge so that it m'ay either stand across the back of A parallel with the plane of the faces or be turned transversely into the notches of the plates A, B, and O, or so many of them as may be used.
In operatin g with my improved Safety-fastener for doors, the door being supposed to fit snugly against the Jamb, the plates B and O will be turned until in line in extension with the plate A, and the barD being parallel with the face of the plate, the hooked and sharpened end of A is placed against the jamb and the door then pressed to, forcing the projection into'the jamb, and. the bar is then turned into the notch in A. It will then be impossible ,to open the door without tearing away the Wood-work of the jamb.
Should the door not fit snugly, then as many leaves will be turned down as with A will fill the crack.
Having thus fully explained the construction and arrangement of my door-fastener, what I elaim as my invention, and seek to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the notched plates A, B, and O with the vib'rating bar D, all eonstructed and arranged substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have sigued my name to this specification in the presenee of two subseribing witnesses.
GEO. E. THOMPSON.
