SHADE ATTACHMENT FOR. GAS-JETS.

.To all whom it may concern.-

Beit known that I, VIRGINIA I. COPLAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, in the District of Columbia,

have inve'hted a new and useful Shade Attachment for Gas-Jets, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to shade attachments for gas jets; and ithas for its object to provide a simple and useful attachment of this character that can be readily fitted onto a gas burner and which may be easily adjusted to any position for the purpose of shading the direct rays of the light from a person in a room, and in this use is especially valuable in SlGk rooms where the jets are burned through the entire night, and where it is highlydesirable to shield the patients eyes from the light.

To this end the main and primary object of the present invention is to provide a folding and readily attachable and detachable shade attachment that shall be simple and inexpensive,while at the same time efficient to accomplish the function of shading the light frombelow, at the side, and top of a gas jet, and also to act in the auxiliary capacity of a heater for small utensils such as tumblers,

With these and other objects in view which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction,combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described,,illustrated and claimed.

In the accompanying drawiugsz Figure 1 is a perspective view of the herein described shade attachment supported in position on a gas burner with the top shade plate supported directly over the gas jet. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the top-shade plate folded at one side of the side shade plate, and the latter braced in its upright position by the side brace wires. Fig. 3 is adetail perspective of the shade attachment folded for convenient handling. Figs. 4 and 5 are details in perspective respectively of the corner brace wires and the side brace Wires.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, 1 designates an ordinary gas fixture bracket carrying the ordinary gas burner 2, which in whereby the attachment may be readily" folded up into a compact form as illustrated in Fig. 3, of the drawings, for convenient handling, while at the same time providing for the ready adjustment and attachment thereof on the gas burner.

The hinge connections between the several shade plates comprising the attachment are partly formed by properly cutting the metal of the plates to receive a hinge pintle as clearly shown in the drawings, and said plates are preferably made out of sheet iron or other suitable light sheet metal that would be adapted for the purpose, and the bottom plate 4-, is provided with a central tube opening 8, in which is rigidly fitted the burner tube 9, that projects above the top face of said plate and is adapted to loosely fit over the gas burner 2, whereby the gas jet will be left perfectly free to burn, while at the same time providing for a rotation of the attachmentou the burner so that the same can bereadily adjusted to the proper position for the purpose of shading any particular portion of the room.

As set up for use the side shade plate 5, is folded up at right angles to thebottom shade plate 4, from one end thereof, and is preferably held braced in this position by the side brace wires 10. The side brace wires 10, consist of suitable lengths of wirethat are bent upon themselves at right angles to their length at each end to form the right angularly disposedclip portions 11-, the clip portions at the lower ends of said brace wires being adapted to be slipped into engagement with the side edges of the bottom shade plate 4, and the clip portions at the other upper ends of said wires being adapted to he slipped over intoengagement with the opposite side edges of the side shade plate 5. The said side brace wires may be readily disconnected from the side and bottom shade plates, and at each extremity the said wires are further brace wires may be used interchangeably or provided with the finger coils 12, wherebythe same may be readily grasped with the fingers for the purpose of attaching and detaching plate 4, will prevent downward reflection of a light and will shade a person who is below' the light, and the side shade plate 5, may be swung to a position to shade the light at one side, and as illustrated in Fig. 2, of the drawngs, the top shade plate may be folded from its position at one side of the side shade plate to a position directly'over the top of the gas jet, and be held in such position by being engaged with the upper clip portions of the side wires 10, but in this adjusted position,

the side and top shade plates are preferably braced and held in their proper relative positions by means of the corner brace wires'13, it of course being understood that the said only one form thereof employed in connection with the attachment, as may be found expedient.

The corner brace wires 13 are adapted to detachably engage with vertically opposite corners of the bottom and top shade'plates, and at their upper and lower ends the said corner brace wires 13, are provided with a pair of U-shaped right angular-1y disposed clip portions 14, the clip portions of each upper and lower pair being disposed at an angle to each other so as to engage over the side and end edges of the shade plate which they engage, it being noted that in engaging the 'U-shaped clip portions 14 with the shade plates, the same are slipped directly over the corners of the plates which project therethrough.

- 'With the top shade plate held in its horizontal position directly over the gas jet, it will be seen that the same will cut off the top reflect-ion of the light which is usually cast on the ceiling and is annoying to weak eyes and to sick persons, and in this position the said plate may also be used as a heating shelf to support small utensils for heating milk, water and the like.

The side and end edges of the shade plates are preferably bent upon themselves to form the edge beads 15, that engage over the side and end edges of the plate facings '16, that are preferably formed of asbestos paper or; other suitable non-combustible material and i are placed upon the outer faces of the shade plates to relieve the eyes from any shining appearance of the metal, and also to add to the appearance of the attachment.

Changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.

Having thus described the invention,what is claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-

1. The herein-described shade attachment consisting of a series of folding shade plates hinged together and adapted to be removably and revolubly mounted on a gas burner and braces to hold said plates open, substantially as set forth.

2. The hereimdescribed shade attachment for gas jets, the same consisting of a series of shade plates hinged together, braces adapted to detachably connect with certain of said plates to hold them in their adjusted positions, and a burner tube fitted to one of said plates and adapted to detachably and revolubly engage over a gas burner, substantially as set forth.

3. The herein-described shade attachment for gas jets, the same consisting of bottom, side, and top metallic shade plates hinged together at their meeting ends, and brace wires adapted to detachably engage with certain of said plates to the same in their adjusted operative positions,substantially as set forth.

4:. In a shade attachment for gas jets, the combination of bottom, side, and top metallic shade plates hinged together at their meeting ends, the lower of said plates being provided with a burner tube, and corner brace wires provided at their upper and lower ends with a pair of U-shaped right-angularly disposed clip portions adapted to detachably engage over the vertically opposite corners of the top and bottom sh ad'e plate s, substantially as set forth.

5. In a shade attachment for gas jets, the

combination of a series of shade plates hinged together and provided with edge beads, and non-combustible plate facings fitted on the outer faces of the shade plates and engaged at their edges by said edge beads, substan- I tially as set forth.
