To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that. I, RAYMOND STUART WAY, a citizen of the United States, and aresident of Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a new and Improved F oldable Gas- Stove, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to gas cooking stoves, and its object is to provide a new and improved gas stove adapted to be'folded into a casing set in a recess in a wall, to take up comparatively little room or not detract from the appearance of the apartment, to. allow of conveniently and quickly unfolding the stove for use, and to automatically shut off the gas supply when folding it into the casing or to turn on the gas supply when moving the gas stove into extended position. For the purpose mentioned, use is made of a casing set is a recess in the wall, a support pivoted in the lower portion of the casing and adapted to fold there in or to rest on the said support when the latter is extended.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a folding gas stove as applied and in extended position, part of the wall and part of the hood of the gas stove being broken out; Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the folding gas stove with the parts in folded position; Fig. 3 is an enlarged cross section of the same; Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional plan view of one of the trunnions of the gas stove and the valve for turning the gas on and off, the section he line 44 of Fig. 5; Fig. 5 is a Fig. 4; and Fig. 6 is a similar view of the same with the oil' the gas.
In a recess in the wall A of an apartment, kitchen or the like is set a casing B provided with a flange B resting against the face of the wall, as plainly indicated in Fig. 1. A support 0 in the form of a table or the like is connected by pivots- C with the sides of parts in position for turning the casing B at the lower portion thereof so that the said support C can he swung outward into horizontal position, as shown in Fig. 1, or can be swung upward and into the casing B, as illustrated in Fig. 3. .Hinged links connect the sides of the support 0 with the sides of the casing B to hold the support C in an extended position. On the s des of the support 0 are arranged extension supports E in the form of tables 0011- nected by hinges E with the said sides of the support 0 to form side extensions thereof, each side extension support E being held in extended position by the use of a chain F attached at F to the flange B of the casing B and detachably connected to a hook F held on the outer side of the corresponding extension support E. The extension supports E when disconnected from the chains F can be folded against the under side of the support C to be folded with the latter within :the casing B when the device is not in use.
On the top of the support C when exended are adapted to rest the legs G of a gas cooking stove G, of any approved construction, to permit of using the gas cookmg' stove in the usual manner. The gas cooking stove G is mounted to swing on trunnions H and H of which the trunnion H is fixed on the gas stove and engages a bearing in one side of the casing B, while the other trunnion H is connected by .a coupling I with a gas supply pipe I connected with a suitable source of gas supply. The burner pipe G of the gascooking stove G terminates in a bearing 3 mounted :to turn on the trunnion H, and the said bearing G is provided with a port G adapted to register with a port H formed in the trunnion H at the time the gas cooking stove G is in extended position and rests on the extended support C; When the gas cooking stove G is swung upward and inward in the casing B then the bearing 8 turns on the trunnion H whereby the port G moves out of engagement with the port H and the gas is cut off from the burner pipe Gr of the cooking stove G (see Fi g. 6-). The bearing Gr may be split, as indicated in Figs. 4C, 5 and 6, to permit of tightly fitting the bearing on the trunnion H to prevent leakage of gas. A hood J is connected by a hinge K with the upper front end of the casing B, and the sides of the hood' are connected by links L with the rear members of the hinged links D so that when the parts are in extended position the hood J is held approximately in a horizontal position above theas cooking stove G, so that any odors arising during the cookin operations strike the hood J and are de ected by the latter into the casing B, from the to of whlch leads a vent pipe N to carry 0 the. odors to a suitable place of discharge, the vent pipe N extending through the wall A. When the support 0 and the cooking stove G are in folded position within the casing B then the hood J overlies the support 0 and its extension supports E at the same time forming a cover for the casing B, as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3. The links L are pivotally connected with the rear members of the links D, and their ends engage recesses J in the under side of the hood J, so as to support said hood in horizontal position or to be disengaged therefrom to permit of folding the hood.
A drip pan P is placed under the stove G and rests on the support C to catch any drippings during the cooking operation. The drip pan is provided at its rear with an upturned flange to catch drippings when the stove is folded up.
It will be noticed that when the stove parts are in folded position, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, no rojections are had in the apartment in whic the stove is located, and hence the folded stove does not detractfrom the appearance of the apartment. Whenit is desired to use the stove it is only necessary to unlock the hood J to swing the same upward into open position and to swing the support and the stove G outward into extended position, as shown in Fig. 1, to permit of using the gas stove in the usual manner for cooking purposes.
It is understood that when the parts are folded the gas supply is shut off from the burner pipe G but when the parts are in extended position the gas is automatically turned on to supply the burner pipe G with.
gas. It willalso be understood that since the support G and the stove G are independently mounted the stove may be swung into the casing and the support serve as a shelf for other purposes.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A foldable gas stove, comprising a casing adapted to be set into a recess in a wall, a support pivoted on the lower portion of the said casing and adapted to fold therein or be extended horizontally therefrom, a gas stove pivoted in the lower portion of the said casing independent of the support and adapted to fold therein or when extended to rest on the said support, and means whereby the gas supply will be cut off when the stove is folded and turned on when the stove is extended.
2. A foldable gas stove, comprising a casing adapted to be set into a recess in a wall, a support pivoted on the lower portion of the said casing and adapted to fold therein 1 or be extended horizontally therefrom,a gas stove pivoted in the said lower portion of the said casing and adapted to fold therein or when extended to rest on the "said support, and a hood pivoted on the top of the casing for forming a cover'for the same or when extended forming a hood for the said gas stove.
3. In a foldable gas stove, the combination with a wall, having a recess therein, of a pivoted support, hinged links for holding the support in a horizontal position, and a gas stove pivoted independently of the support and adapted to rest upon the said support when in use and to fold into the recess in the wall when not in use so that the support may serve as a shelf for other purposes.
4. In a foldable gas stove, the combination with a wall having arecess therein, of a pivoted support, a pivoted gas stove adapted to 7 rest on the said support and to fold w1th the said support into the recess in the wall,the support when folded covering the folded stove, and a pivoted hood adapted to extend over the said gas stove when the latter and the support are in extended position and to cover the said support when the latter and the gas stove are in folded position.
5. A foldable gas stove, comprising a casing adapted to be set into a recess in a wall, a support pivoted on the lower portion of the said casing and adapted to fold therein or be extended horizontally therefrolma gas stove pivoted in the lower portion of the said casing and adapted to fold therein or when extended rest on the said support, side extension supports hinged to the sides ofthe said support and adapted to be folded thereon, and flexible means detachably connecting the said side extensions with the said casing.
6. A foldable gas stove, comprising a casing adapted to be set into a recess in a wall a support pivoted on the lower portion 0. the said casing and adapted to fold therein or be extended horizontally therefrom, a gas stove pivoted in the lowerportion of the said casing independent of the support and adapted to fold therein or when extended to rest on the said support, means for holding the support in a horizontal position and folding with said support into the casing, and means for supplying the said gas stove with gas, the said means having a cut-oif valve adapted toopen on swinging the gas stove into extended position, and adapted to close on folding the gas stove into the casing.
7. A foldable gas stove, comprising a casing set in a recess in a wall and provided with a vent pipe, a support pivoted to the allow of folding the said gas stove into the ing set in a recessin a wall and provided ed to cover t e said support when both are in lower front portion of the said casing to extend horizontally therefrom or to fold into the casing, hinged links connecting the said support with the said casing to hold the sup port in an extended position, a gas stove provided with trunnions having bearings in the lower side portions of the said casing to casing and to allow of swinging the gas stove outward to rest on the said support, one of the said trunnions being hollow and connected with a source of gas supply, and a valve in the said hollow trunnion and adapted to open on swinging the gas stove outward into position of use, and adapted to close on swlnging the gas stove into folded position in the casing.
8. A foldable gas stove, comprising a caswith a vent pipe, a support pivoted to the lower front portion of the said casing to extend horizontally therefrom or to fold into the casing, hinged links connecting the said support with the said casing to hold the support in an extended position, a gas stove provided with trunnions having hearings in the lower side portions of the said casing to allow of folding the said gas stove into the casing and to allow of swinging the gas stove outward to rest on the said support, one of the said trunnions being hollow and connected with a source of gas supply, a
valve in the said hollow trunnion and adapted to open on swinging the gas stove outward into position of use and adapted to close on swlnging the gas stove into folded position in the casing, a hood hinged to the upper front ortion of the casing and adaptthe lower side portions of the folded position, and links pivotally connected with the said hinged links and engaging the said hood. 9. A foldable gas stove, comprising a casing set in a recess in a wall and provided with a vent pipe, a sup ort pivoted to the lower front portion of t e said casing to extend horizontally therefrom or to fold into the casing, hinged links connecting the said sup port with the said casing to hold the support in an extended position, a gas stove provided with trunnions having bearings in said casing to allow of folding the said gas stove into the casing and to allow of swinging the gas stove outward to rest on the said support, one of the said trunnions being hollow and connected with a source of gas supply, a valve in the said hollow trunnion and adapted to open on swinging the gas stove outward into position of use and adapted to close on swinging the gas stove into folded position in the casing, a hood hinged to the upper front portion of the casing and adapted to cover the said support when both are in folded position, links pivotally connected with the said hinged links and engaging the said hood, side extension supports hinged tothe sides of the said support and adapted to be folded thereon, and flexible connections detachably connecting the said casing with the said sideextension supports.
