Patented JuIy 19, 190?.
Application filed September l7 1904. Serial No. 224,926.
To all whmrt it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLARD 0. JAMES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a new and useful Combination Apartment-Closure and specification.
The present invention relates more particularly to apartment constructions such as shown in my Patent No. 756,371, dated April 5, 1904, wherein two communicating apartments are provided with an intervening door or closure whereon is mounted a gas-stove in such manner that the stove may be swung The main object of the present invention is to so construct the closure and stove-support that when the stove is brought into either apartment said support will serve as a closure between the apartments. For this purpose the said support and closure is formed as a door pivotally mounted to swing on a vertical axis midway of its width, so that it can be turned completely around, bringing the stove, which is supported on one side thereof, into either one of the apartments at will. In connection with such a closure and stove-support I prefer to provide a door, swinging at the side of said closure, scrvingto ble stove-support for operation thereof.
The invention is particularly intended for use in .connection with gas-stoves, the support being provided with means for the proper supply of fuel to said stove.
The invention is further particularly intended for use in apartments such as described in the aforesaid patent, wherein a sm aller apartment or compartment serving as a kitchen and pantry opens out of a larger apartment, which serves as a dining-room and, if desired, for other purposes.
An important object of my invention in this connection is to provide closure means which will serve as a screen between the apartveniences will be hidden from the: main apartment both when the stove is in the kitchen apartment and when it is in the main apartment. r
A further object of the invention is to provide means for supporting the stove in such manner that it may be brought completely into either apartment, so as to serve, for exturning in a pivot-socket 9 in te top ample, for cooking in the kitchen apartment or for heating the main apartment while maintaining complete closure between the apartments. I
Another object of the invention is to enable the stove-support to be used to transfer the food from the kitchen to the dining-room after cookin be used for light cooking in the dining-room While shutting'ofi the kitchen.
and also to enable the stove 'to The. accompanying dravpings illustrate the invention.
Figure 1 is a side elevation looking from the main apartment toward the door and combined closure and stove-support. section on line as m in Fi 1.
Fig. 4'is a diagrammatic plan of the two apartments. Fig. 5 isa vertical section of the means for pivotally supportin the swinging closure and stove-support an supplyin fuel thereto. Fig. Sis apartl broken side e evation of the parts shown in ig. 5.
Referring to Fig. 4, 1 designates the main apartment, which may be assumed to be a dining-room or combination dihin -room, living-room, and bed-room, as set fortli in :my said patent, and 2-designates a minor apartment or compartment at one side of apartment 1 and adaptedto be :used as a kitchen and pantry. Thewall 3 between said apartments is provided with an opening 4, through which said apartments communicate, said opening being 'closedlby aidoor 5jfland a swinging closure,,6,'placed side -b "side, so

The upper pivot may be simply a of the door-casing 7, and in case a stove other than a gas-stove is used the lower pivot may be similarly formed. I prefer, however, to use a pivotal construction such as shown in Figs; 5 and 6 for the lower bearing, said construction comprisin a step-bearing, rin or collar 10, fastened on the fioorll, an a bearing-plate 12, fastened at the bottom of the door and having a downturned ring 13, forming, in conjunction with the step-bearing colliottoniby lar, an annular channel for the reception of The plate 12 may have port for the door.
, the lower pivot. For this purpose a gas-sup- 19 designates the stove, which is attached to onesideof the swinging closure 6, so that "said closure serves also as a support for the stove.
Said stove is preferably a gas-stove and. is supplied with fuel through pi 0 cona pivot of the swinging closure-for examp e,
and an L or fitting 23'screwsinto said gasket-ring and surrounds the hollow stud, so as to'compress the packing 24, placed between said parts, and thereby give a gas-tight joint.
A pipe 25 leads from said L to the gas-stove.
The compartment 2 may contain the usual kitcheni'acilities, such as a sink 26 andshelves 27, and when the swinging closure is moved.
tofibring the stove into said compartment 1 said-stove may extend alongside the sink into thespace between thesinkand shelves, so
that practically all the space in said compart- -.,;nrent will be utilized' Furthermore, the sink 26 may extend nearly to the front of said'icompartment, so thatin using the sink ,.-1thedpor.5'wi11 be open and the user will '---;"sta "fdi'n'the opening. Practically all the use na space commonly occupied by a small .-.-p'1qset, and a-person standing in the doorway m n have access to the sink, the stove, and
-; shelves.- If, however, it is desired to bring 2,, also to the swinging sirably provided to hold the swin ing closure 6 ineither oft he above-descr bed.positions,
:offa kitchen can be obtained, therefore, withsaid catch engaging with detent-sockets 31 in the top of the casing 7 and having operating I means, such as a depending chain 32 ,connected thereto to enable the catch to be drawn down to release the closure. Sockets 31 are desirably provided at each side of the pivotal connection of the swinging closure, so as to lock the closure in either position.- The catch 30 is movable into sockets 31 when passing toward the same from either direction, so that the door or closure can be turned to either position in either direction.
It will be seen that when the door 5 is open h the member 6, upon which the stove is mounted, forms only a partial closure between the apartments, a passage opened and closed by door 5 being provided at one side of the pivoted closure upon which the stove is mounted.
What I claim is 1. The combination of two adjacent apartments, a wall therebetween provided with an opening, a door hinged in said opening, anda swinging closure pivotally and reversibly mounted adjacent to said door and a stove attached to one side of said swinging closure.
2. The combination with two communicating apartments of a swinging closure pivotally and reversibly mounted therebetween to swing on an axis midway of its width, a gas-stove attached to said swinging closure and supply connections for said gas-stove extending through a pivot of the closure.
3. The combination with two communicating apartments of a partial closure therebe tween pivotally mounted to reversibly present either side to either apartment, and a stove attached to one side of said swinging closure, a passage between said apartments being provided at one side of said closure.
4. A main apartment, a minor apartment communicating therewith, a sink in the minor apartment extending adjacent to the opening between said apartments, a door partly closing said opening, and a swinging closure for the rest of said opening carrying a stove and reversibly mounted to extend the stove alongside thev sink in the minor apartment, or into the main apartment.
In testimony whereof I have myjhand, at Los'Angeles, California, this day of September, 19041: t i a WILLARD 0. JAMES.
hereunto set 9th In presence of- A. P. KNIGHT,
RILLA RoBERrs.
