My invention relates to an improvement in charcoal stoves, and my general object is to provide a small portable stove for the convenient use of automobilists, campers,
etc. The stove is particularly constructed to permit attachment of an air pump thereto to promote and quicken starting operaand is provided with a foldable support at its bottom and a hinged cover at its top to permit its use with safety and satisfactory results either as a heater within an automobile or as a heater and cook stove in open and exposed places. As constructed the stove permits quickstarting of a charcoal fire; and a uniform intense heat or hot fire may be maintained within the stove underthe control of a damper and a;hinged cover adapted alsoto be used as a damper. The cover may also be usedas a hot plate and a support for cooking utensils.

Fig. 6 is a bottom View of the'stove with the supporting plates folded flat upon the bottom.
The stove comprises a shallow sheet1metal cylinder r shell, preferably round although not necessarily ofthat outline or shape. The bottom of the stove is closed by a dished or flanged plate 3. A cast-iron'p1ate.4c having short legs anda central dependlng h1g6 is seated upon bottom 3 and held in fixed position thereon by a single screw 7 Screw 7 also serves as a pivotal connection for a curved damper or door 8 whichis adapted or close an elongated air-intake opening 9 at the front ofthe stove beneath the perforated plate l which serves as a grate for the charcoal. Damper '8 isformed of a narrow fiat strip of metalbentat one end to correspond with the curvature of the round shell 2, and also bent to provide a supporting arm 10 having a fiat angular ex- 1-1 lying in a horizontal plane so that it may be interposed between h1g6 and 7 may secureitpivotally in place for rotatable movement. knob or handle 12 is secured to curved damper portion 8 where it extends through opening 9 within convenient reach o fthe hand.
The bottom plate 3 is punched with a number of rectangular openings '14 arranged in pairs to permit separate flat plates 15 to beconnected'to said bottom by means of ears orlugs 16 extending at an angle from one edge of each plate. and two of said supporting plates are ,arranged parallel and adapted to be folded toward each other, providing a third plate 15 extending at right angles to plates 15-15 'is also folded flat upon the bottom. However, when the two supporting plates 15- 15 are unfolded at right angles in respect to the bottom the .bracing and locking plate 15 may :be unfolded and placed jbeftween the supporting plates 15-15 I so that a stable support will be provided for the stove. Perforated grate 4: is fiat ontopandiribbed at its bottom .and the perforations 18'are preferably more numerous near the periphery than in its central portion. Extending toward the center of thegrate is ajperforate d pipe or tube 19 whichis fastened at one end to the shell or. body2-ofthe stove by means of nuts 20. The inner end of this pipe or 'tube is closed byaplug 2 1 and theQPposite sides thereof are provided with a series of small perforations or 3.11 outlet orifices 22.
This pipe or tube is also .placedclosely ad- .jacentthe top of grate 4, andthe outer'end 23 is reduced and screw-threaded to permit a detachable coupling connection to "be made with theflexible air tube 24- of an ail-pump 25,.such as commonly usedfor inflating automobile tires by'hand. Aremovabjlelnipple 2.6 may be attached to the open end 23 of pipe 19 when pump 25 is not connected thereto. When the stove is in use the charcoalon grate ktcovers and enclosestube or pipe 19 and the depth or thickness of the bed of charcoal may be more or lessdepend- .ent upon thedemand or need of the'stove.
' A flat inturned flange provides a ringshapedtop127and a round opening 28 of less diameter than the charcoal chamber within the stove, thereby permitting a pan or dish to be inserted through round opening 28 and placed at rest upon the hot bed of charcoal, or placed in seating engagement with and suspended within the edge of open ing 28, or placed at rest upontop flange 27 over opening 28; the size or the kind of the pan or dish determining its placement or setting within or upon the stove. When opening 28 is closed by a pan or dish the draft to promote combustion is through an opening 29 in the side of shell'2 at the rear of the stove at a point or place relatively near the top flange 27 or above the bed of charcoal upon grate 4. When a slow burning fire or low heating or slow cooking results are desired, the draft or circulation of air through opening 29 may be shut off and the top opening 28 closed at the same time by means of a fiat disk-shaped cover 30,
"having a right-angled arm or extension 31 which is of sufiicient size and length to cover opening 29 when cover 30 rests flat upon top flange 27. Extension 31 of cover 30 also serves as a hinge member for the cover, its lower end having a hinge connection 32 with the side of the shell or body 2 immediately beneath draft opening 29, see Fig. 5. The angular extension 31 may be of any desirable length, but as shown it will place the fiat disk-part 30 of the cover in a much lower plane than the top of the stove when the said cover is turned back and inverted as illustrated in Fig. 1, thereby permitting the cover to be used as a restor support for a cooking utensil, plates, etc.
Inuse a fire may be quickly started, using charcoal in the stove, by covering pipe 19 with charcoal together with some quick combustible which may be readily ignited and a flame produced therefrom especially when air is forced laterally over the grate through the side orifices in tube or pipe 19. To ob tain quick ignition gasoline may be introduced into the charcoal through pipe 19. In this proceeding it is only necessary to oper-' ate pump 25 slowly, avoiding strong blasts of air. When the charcoal is burning the degree of heat or fire required may be regulated by damper 8 but if a quick burning or a hot lire is desired the pump may be used to provide a forced feed of air. If the stove is to be used as a slow cooker or merely as a heat radiator, damper 8 and cover 30 may be closed to confine the heat and produce slow burning of the charcoal. In this form the stove may be used as a heater within an automobile or elsewhere, and may also be safely carried and handled by means of a pair of knobs or handles 33 affixed to opposite sides of the stove.
lVhat I claim, is:
1. A relatively small portable charcoal stove for campers, comprising a sheet metal cylinder having a grate therein and a dampered draft opening beneath said grate, and a perforatedtube fixed permanently to said cylinder above the grate having an open intake end outside of said cylinder.
2. A portable charcoal stove for campers, comprising a sheet metal cylinder having an open cooking top, a grate within said cylinder beneath said top, and a. tube extending through the wall of said cylinder between said top and grate, said tube being perforated within the cylinder and having a fluid intake end outside of the stove.
3. A portable charcoal stove, comprising a combustion chamber having an open top and a closed bottom, a grate within said chamber, separate draft opening. beneath and above said grate, and a hinged cover for said open top adapted to open the draft opening above the grate when unfolded and to close it when folded.
4. A portable charcoal stove, comprising a sheet metal cylinder having a draft outlet at one side and a closed bottom and an open top, l a grate within said cylinder, a dampered draft intake at one side of cylinder beneath said grate, and a cover having a hinged extension overlapping the side of said cylinder and said draft outlet.
5. A portable charcoal stove, comprising a sheet metal cylinder having an open top and a closed bottom and containing a grate, a perforated air tube extending into said cylinder for initial starting, draft openings in the side of said cylinder adapted to maintain combustion after starting, and a cover for said open top adapted to open and close one of said draft openings in opening and closing the top.
6. A portable charcoal stove, comprising a sheet metal cylinder having a closed bottom formed with slots and fiat folding strips having right angled lugs extending through saidslots to permit said strips to be unfolded into bracingrelation with said bottom and with each other to support said cylinder.
7. A portable charcoal stove having a flanged open top and a draft opening at one side, and a cover for said top having a rightangled extension hinged to one side of the stove and adapted to permit the cover to be inverted and placed in a lower plane than said draft opening to support a utensil at the side of the stove, said extension also serving to close said draft opening when the cover is closed.
8. A portable charcoal stove, comprising a hollow cylinder having a draft opening in one side and a closed bottom, a perforated grate having a central lug, a circular damper for said opening having an arm interposed between said lug and bottom, and a pivot screw for said arm connecting said lug and bottom.
9. A portable charcoal stove, comprising a hollow sheet metal cylinder having a closed bottom, a flat perforated plate subdividing said cylinder horizontally having legs seated upon said bottom and provided With a depending lug at its center, and a rotatable damper for said stove pivotally connected with said lug.
10. A portable charcoal stove, comprising a hollow sheet metal cylinder having a draft opening, and an open top, a hinged cover for 10 said top, a perforated grate above said draft opening having a central lug, a perforated air tube for initial starting extending horizontally into the middle part of said cylinder above said grate, and a damper for said draft opening rotatably mounted upon said lug.
