Be it known that I, ERVIN E. WITHEY, of

Syracuse, in the'county of Onondaga, in the Stateof New Yo'rk, have invented new and useful Improvements inBits, of whichthe following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description This invention relates'to bits, as a new article of manufacture, and adapted forgeneral driving purposes.

Heretofore the mouth-pieces for bits have been constructed of leather, raw-hide, or similar material, but in each instance it has consisted in doubling the material upon itself,

leaving the edges of the hide exposed to the action of the air and moisture, which has resulted in very soon allowing the mouth-piece.

to decay, thereby rendering it unsafe for use;

and, for the purpose'of obviating this diffi-' culty and objection, my'object is to produce and construct a month-piece for abit in which the raw edges are concealed for the purpose of excluding the air and moisture and exposing-but the grained side of the hide to the air and moisture; and to that end myinvention consists in the several new and novel features of construction hereinafter described, and which are specifically set forth in the claims hereunto annexed. It is constructed as follows, reference being had to the accom panyingdrawings, in which- Figure 1, shows a side View of the bit. Fig. 2, shows an edge view thereof. Fig. 3, shows the construction of the mouth-piece. Fig. 4, is a view of the filler. Fig. 5, is a cross section on line -x-.:c-, Fig. 3. Fig. 6, is across section on line -yy-,Fig. 2.

A- is the bit complete, comprising the mouth-piece aand cheek-piece, or ring, -b-. The mouth-piece is composed of a strip of rawhide, or similar material, folded so as to present the grained surface outward, and having its edges stitched or otherwise secured together, as shown. cis a filler of raw-hide, or other similar material, inclosed within the mouth-piece to give it additional strength. The mouth-piece is then bent upon itself as shown, inclosing the rings, the ends 'mitered together as shown at -d and the whole stitched together so as to force the raw edges to firmly abut against each other for the purpose of excluding the air and moisture.

It will be observed that I mayalso take a strip of raw-hide, or similar material, and fold it at a short distance from its lateral edges so as to have its edges approach each other and lie substantially in the same plane, and then fold the entire piece transversely so as to inclose the cheek-pieces, or rings, and secure the folds together laterally, and thereby exclude the air and'moisture.

Having described my invention, what I claim is 1. A mouth-piece for a bit, as a new article of manufacture, comprising a strip of rawwith the grain out, its edges secured together,

folded upon itself, rings within the folds at each end, the meeting edges mitered'or dovetailed together, and the Whole of said mouthpiece stitched or secured together laterally,

as set forth.

' 3. A mouth-piece for a bit, as anew article of manufacture, comprising a strip of'rawhide, or similar material, folded with the grain out, its lateral edges approaching each other and lying substantially in the same plane,

then folded transversely to inclose the cheek-' piece, or ring, and the folds secured together laterally.
