Be it known that I, AUGUST HENRY AL BERSHARDT, a citizen of the United States, reslding at Crawfordsville, in the county of Montgomery and State ofl Indiana, have inventeda new and useful Attachment for Val1sesSatchels, and Grips, of which the following is a specification.

My invention refers more particularly to an attachable and aremovable annex for valises, satchels, and grips and has for its object to produce a convenience of the character descrlbed whereby a greater packing capacity 1s obtained without adding but little to the the heft of the valise, satchel, or grip and consists in the peculiar construction, combinat1on,and arrangement of the several parts as will be'pointed out more minutely in the following description and claims. .This ob- Ject has been fully attained by the annex illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specificatation, in Which-- Flgure lis a perspective view of my in- Vention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view beginning at the line M, M, Fig. 1.

Like numbers of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout both views.

In the construction of my invention, I use an inner side-piece 1, an outer side-piece 2, the folding ends 3, a folding bottom 4, a pliable lid or cover 5, a series of connecting springs 6, a series of fastening straps 7, and a pair of binding cords 8.

The rectangular inner and outer side-pieces 1 and 2, being constructed of stiff, bendable leather, canvas, or other like material, are connected and bound at the corners by the sprlngs 6 for the purpose of `forming a selfcloslng annex on being relieved of the contents. at the ends of the side-pieces 1 and 2 between the springs 6 for the purpose of limiting the expansion of the annexto the length of the cords.

The fastening straps 7 being attached at the corners of the inner side-piece l are buttoned over the buttons or studs 9 of the valise, satchel, or grip for the purpose of securing the annex thereon and removingit when desired. A pliable lid or cover 5 is secured to the inner side-piece 1 and provided on the inside near the outer edge withapair of studs A pair of binding cords 8 are securedy 10 adapted to fasten into the stud-caps 11 of the outer side-'piece 2.

The folding ends 3 and bottom 4 are creased so as to fold neatly and closely together and are securely attached to the ends of the side-pieces'l and 2. The outer sidepiece'2 is provided with a series of ordinary stud-caps 11 to receive and clasp the studs 10 for the purpose of fastening the lid or cover at different places on the side thereof. A hand-'strap 12, secured to the outer side-piece 2 is pulled in opening the annex for the reception or removal of its contents.

In using my invention, the annex is attached or removed from the valise, satchel, or grip by simply buttoning orunbuttoning the straps over the studs orbuttons on the valise, satchel or grip. By providing a series of stud-capsas shown in the drawings, the lid or cover may be fastened at any place desired c onY the outer side-piece of vthe annex. The annex is opened for the reception or removal ofl an article by simply pulling on the handstrap, it being self-closing on being released.

In the above construction I produce a simt ple and convenient article that can be easily attached to or removed from a valise, satchel,

or grip whereby travelers and tourists mayv greatly increase the packing capacity of their hand-baggage without adding but little to its heft.

Having thus fullyd described my invention and shown the operation and advantages thereof, what I claim as new, and desire to se.

cure by Letters Patent, is

1. An attachment or annex for valises, satchels, and grips having a stiff, bendable inner and outer -side-piece connected at the corners by springs for the purpose of forming a self-closing annex and at the ends between the springs by a pair of binding cords for limiting the expansion of the annex to the length of the cords, the folding ends and bottom, the same being creased for being folded neatly and closely together, and the pliable lid or cover provided on the inside near the outer edge with a pair of studs adapted to be fastened into the stud-caps of the `outer sidepiece, substantially as specified.

2. An attachment or annex for Valises, satchels, and grips, the same comprising a rectangular inner and outer side-piece, the

inner side-piece being provided at the corners with fastening straps adapted to be louttoned to or unbuttoned from thevalise,satchel, or grip, the outer side-piece havingI a series of stud-caps adapted to receive and clasp the studs on the lid or cover whereby it may be fastened at different places to said sidepieee, the connecting springs whereby the annex is made self-closing, a pair of bindingcords for limiting the expansion of the annex, the folding ends and bottom adapted to be closed neatly and closely together, and the pliable lid or cover, having apair of studs near the outer edge thereof adapted to be fastened into the stud-caps on the outer side- I5 piece at differentplaees, substantially as specied.
