A. HARRIS COMBINATION BAG AND AUXILIARY CONTAINER June 27, 1961 2 Sheets-Sheet 1 Filed Feb. 27, 1958 INVENTOR, BY .Jlmam fvr/'5 FIG.6
ATTORNEY June 27, 1961 A. HARRIS COMBINATION BAG AND AUXILIARY CONTAINER 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Filed Feb. 27, 1958 BY Mi/9&9-
ATTORNEY 2,989,998 COMBINATION BAG AND AUXILIARY CONTAINER Abraham Harris, as Main st., white Plains, N. Fixed Feb. 27, 195s, ser. No. 717,885 s Claims. (cl. rsu-1.6)
This invention relates to a combination bag and auxiliary container and more specifically concerns a brief bag provided with a detachable looseleaf binder portfolio, purse or the like.
An object of this invention is to provide the conventional brief bag, with a quickly detachable auxiliary container which will augment the carrying capacity of the bag; facilitate access to items segregated in either the bag or container; permit the container and bag to be used independently of each other and to provide simple latch means for mounting the container on the bag.
Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.
In the drawings, FIG. 1 is a side elevational view of a combination brief bag and container carrying a looseleaf binder, in accordance with the instant invention, parts thereof being broken away;
FIG. 2 is an end view thereof;
FIG. 3 is an enlarged elevational view of the latch means for mounting the container on the bag;
FIG. 4 is a sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of FIG. 3;
FIG. 5 is a sectional view taken on the line 5-5 of FIG. 3;
FIG. 6 is a rear elevational View of said latch means.
FIG. 7 is a front elevational view of a modified form of the invention; and
FIG. 8 is an end view thereof.
Referring in detail to the drawings and particularly to FIGS. l and 2, 10 designates a combination bag and container embodying the invention. The same comprises a brief bag y11 with a looseleaf portfolio 12 detachably mounted thereon.
Bag 11 is made up of leather, artifcal leather or other suitable material, comprising side walls 13 interconnected by a exible bottom gusset 14 and end gussets 15, a handle 16, closing ap 17 and closing latch 1S. Corner reinforcements 1-9 may be provided on the lower corners of side walls 13.
The portfolio 12 is also made of exible material similar to that used in making bag 11; the same being formed from a single sheet folded along a median line 20 to provide similar, opposed wall portions 21, 22. Wall - portions 21, 22 are retained by tapes 23, 24 respectively secured to the side and top edges of said wall portions and carrying conventional slide fastener elements 25. A conventional ring binder assembly 26 is secured along the fold line of the portfolio.
Latch means generally indicated at 27, detachably connects portfolio 12 to bag 11. Such latch means comprises a hollow rectangular shaped post 28 fixed to one side wall 13 of bag 11 and projecting outwardly thereof. Post 28 includes rearwardly extending prongs 29 which pierce the wall 13 and are turned over to secure the post in place. Preferably, prongs 29 also extend through an apertured reinforcing plate 30 disposed in contact with the -rear surface of side Wall 13.
Extending forwardly from post 28 is a turnable latch member 31 having a rearwardly extending stem 32 with a spiral spring 33 mounted thereon for holding member 31 in vertical or horizontal positions.
As shown in FIGS. 4 and 5, wall portion 22 of portfolio 12 is formed with a rectangular shaped opening 34, which opening is reinforced at the marginal portions thereof by .a pair of metal plates 35, 36 located on op- 2,989,998 Patented June 27, 19,61

posite sides of said wall portion. The inner plate 35 is formed with anv opening 37 registering `with opening 34 and having top and bottom anges 38. The outer plate 36 is formed with an opening 39 also registering with opening 34 and having opposite end flanges 40 which extend through opening 34 and are turned over into gripping contact with end portions of inner plate 35. 'I'he top and lbottom anges 38 of inner plate 35 abut the inner marginal portion of outer plate 36 at the opening 39 thereof, thus defining opening 34 with metallic material throughout the periphery thereof.
Preferably, two latch means 27 are provided in laterally spaced relation as shown in FIG. l; such latch means being located adjacent the top edge of the side wall 13 of ybag 11. With the latch members 31 turned to their horizontal position, the portfolio 1-2 may be mounted on bag 11, the posts 28 passing through the complementary openings 34; the latch members 31 then being turned to their vertical positions as shown in FIG. 3 to lock the portfolio 12 to bag 11, yet permitting quick release of the same.
The proportions of portfolio 12 may be such that median line 20 thereof is disposed adjacent the bottom edge of bag 11, as shown in FIGS. l, 2. Thus, the portfolio 12 may be opened while the same is mounted on bag 11, or may be completely detached from bag 11 by manipulation of latches 27. Also, portfolio 12 will hug the sides 13 of bag 11.
Another form of the invention is shown in FIGS. 7, 8 wherein a lbag 11a, similar to bag 11, is provided with a detachable container 12a of smaller size. Bag. 11a includes a handle 16a, a closing flap 17a and a closing latch 18a.
The container 12a is formed of a single sheet of material folded on a median line 20a to provide opposed wall portions 21a, 22a which may be closed by slide fastener tapes 23a, 24a interconnected by conventional slide fastener element, not shown.
Container 12a is mounted on a side wall 13a of bag 11a by means of latch means 27a, similar to latch means 27 previously described, a single latch means in centered relation to bag 11a and container 12a, -being sufficient. Thus, container 12a may function as a purse or the like, for holding small articles, or the like, or may function as a lunch carrier for children. In any case, container 12a may be quickly attached or detached from bag 11a by proper manipulation of latch means 27a.
The latch means 27, 27a used to detachably mount the portfolio 12 or container 12a on bags 11, 11a respectively, are relatively unobtrusive in appearance and do not detract from the appearance of said bags when the portfolio or container is detached therefrom.
As various changes might be made in the embodiments of the invention herein set forth without departing from the spirit thereof, it is understood that all matter herein shown or described is deemed illustrative and not by way of limitation except as set forth in the appended claims.
Having thus disclosed my invention, I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent:
l. In combination, a bag and an auxiliary container mounted on said bag, said bag having opposed at side walls providing an opening along the top edge of said bag, a closing ap secured to one of said side walls and extending over said opening, and latch means on the other side Wall for engaging said closing ap, said auxiliary container having opposed at side walls providing an Opening along one edge thereof and closure means for said opening, and means for detachably connecting said con tainer to said bag rwith one side wall of said container in close contact throughout the extent thereof with said one side wall of the bag, said connecting means comprising a pair of laterally spaced latch means projecting outwardly from said one side wall of the bag adjacent the top edge thereof and a pair of laterally spaced openings in said one side Wall of the container for receiving the respective latch means, whereby said container is held in depending and closely abutting relation to said bag and the closure means on the container mayV be opened to gain access to said pair of spaced latch means for manipulation thereof to detach the container from said bag While leaving said bag in a closed condition.
2. The combination as in claim 1 wherein said second mentioned latch means comprises a post Xed on the outer surface of the bag wall, a. latch member rotatably mounted on said post, the openings in the 4Wall of said container being reinforced about the marginal portions thereof.
3. The combination as in claim 2 wherein said reinforcement comprises metal plates on opposite sides of said container wall, said plates having inturned ange portions dening the opening in said container wall, a pair of said flange portions extending from one plate engaging the other plate to secure said plates in engagement with said container wall.
