To all whom it may concern;

Be it known that I, CARRIE AUGUSTA BUR- GEss, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Waists, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to vcertain new and useful improvements in waists and it has for its objects among others to provide a simple and cheap fastening which can be'readily applied to the back or front of a dress waist and so constructed that when the same is in position it will close the joint or seam so completely as to give it the appearance of an ordinary seam, the adjacent edges of the steels being brought so close togetherthat when covered with dress goods there will be nospace between the adjacent edges of the goods when thelatter are placed under strain. I employ two pieces of metal, upon which are secured hooks and eyes alternately arranged so as to prevent any movement and producing the strongest possible fastening While giving the effect and result above specified. Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear and the novel features thereof will be specifically defined by the appended claim.

The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the let ters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of the steels and their hooks and eyes. Fig. 2 is an inside view of a portion of a waist with the steels secured therein and the hooks and eyes engaged. Fig. 3 is a view of the outside of the waist.

Like letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views.

In carrying out my invention I employ for each waist two strips A A', preferably of steel, of suitable width and of any required length. To each of these strips I secure in any suitable manner hooks B and eyes C. These hooks may be of any well known form,

preferably with a hump to prevent their easy separation,although ordinarily the hump will not be necessary owing to the alternating arrangement of the hooks and eyes. hooks and eyes are arranged alternately, that is, on each strip I place first ahook and then an eye, and on the companion strip I place them so that the hooks Willcome opposite the eyes on the other strip as clearly shown in Fig. l. The strips A and A are iiexible and their ends may or may not be tipped with metallic tips d as may be deemed best.

The waist D is provided with pockets along its meeting edges and the stiffeners which are resilient are located in said pockets where they are secured in any suitable manner; the hooks and eyes on said stiffeners being arranged near the edge thereof so that when they are engaged the edges of the stieners or strips will be brought practically into contact with each other as seen best in Fig. 2 whereby wh en the waist is fastened the edgesof the goods will be held so close together as seen in Figs. 2 and 3 as to have the appearance of an ordinary seam which will not open when the waist is placed under strain.

The hooks and eyes may be placed closer together or farther apart as desired. The flexibility of the strips A and lA permits of fastening and unfastening of the hooks and eyes with ease.

What I claim as new is- A waist having pockets along its meeting edges, resilient stiffeners in said pockets, each of said stiffeners having secured thereto hooks and eyes whichy project through the front edges of the pockets to hold the edges in close contact to give the appearance of an ordinary seam, the hooks and eyes 'on each stiffener being alternately arranged, substantially as specified.
