v G. HUNZINGER.
, GAME TABLE. NO. 522,014." Patented June 26, 1894.
showing my improvement.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE HUNZIN GER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
GAM E-JI'ABLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 522,014, dated June 26, 1894.
Application filed February 23,1894. Serial No. 501,119. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
' Be it known that I, GEORGE HUNZINGER, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Game-Tables, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a reversible top table adapted especially to the use of four or more persons in playing whist, euchre and other games. 7
In my improvement the reversible top is pivoted to two opposite legs and is supported and steadied by two other legs which are intermediate to the legs carrying the pivots. These intermediate legs have springs that support the table top at opposite points that are at right angles to the pivots, the springs yielding under pressure to permit the top to be turned over. Iprefer to make one side of the reversible top plain and to cover the other side with cloth and provide in this side of the top one or more sunken cups for the reception of counters, 850., in playing games.
The legs of the table are preferably curved outwardly and upwardly from a base to provide more room for those who sit around the table.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation Fig. 2 is an elevation with the table top partially turned over and in a vertical position. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the same, and Fig. 4 a detached I section showing the spring, the parts being of larger size than in the other figures.
The reversible topa is preferably plain on one side 2 and covered with cloth on the other side 3 and also provided'with one or more sunken cups 0,. The plain side is suitable for games of whist, euchre, 850., and the cloth side for such games as use counters. The top a is connected to two opposite legs I) b by pivots at and upon these pivots the top a can be swung to bring either side uppermost. The legs a o are located at intermediate points to the legs I) b; or in other words, a plane through either pair of legs would cross at right angles a plane through the other pair of legs.
In the upper end of the legs 0 cand upon their inner faces are the springs 01 secured at 5 to the legs and each provided'with a flat top to bear against the under side of the top a to steady and support the said top at right angles to the pivots. I prefer to make a return bend 6 at the back of the moving end of each of the springs d and the bend 6 bears against a plate 7 on the face of the leg to limit the forward movement of the spring and aid in supporting the same.
The pairs of legs b b and c c are preferably secured to the base 6 and are provided with suitable feet, and said legs rise from said base 6 in an outwardly and upwardly direction, the object of which is to provide in the contracted base more room for those who sit around the table than would be the case were the legs straight.
I am aware that reversible tops supported and pivoted by clamping pivots to two opposite legs have heretofore been employed for games such as checkers and chess, and I do not claim any such device.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination in a game table with the reversible top, of two opposite legs and pivots connecting said legs and top whereby the top is adapted to be turned over, and two legs intermediate to the aforesaid legs, and spring devices connected to these intermediate legs for engaging and supporting the reversible top at points at right angles to the pivots, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination in a game table, of the reversible top plain on one side and covered with cloth and provided with one or more sunken receptacles on the other side, pivots upon opposite edges, and legs to which said pivots are connectedwhereby the top is adapted to be turned over, and two intermediate legs and the springs connected with their up-' per ends for engaging and supporting the reversible top at points at right angles or nearly so to the pivots, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination in a game table with a reversible top a, of a base e,-pairs of equidistant legs I) b and c c that extend outwardly upwardly from said base, pivots in the upper ends of the legs b b engaging the top a and upon which said top swings, and spring devices in the upper ends of the legs 0 c for engaging and supporting the top a at right angles or nearly so to the pivots, substantially as set forth.
Signed by me this 19th day of February, A. D. 1894:.
GEO. HUN ZINGER. Witnesses:
