TO WLADYSLAW SZCZEPANIAK AND ONE-THIRD T0 STANYSLAW OF WATERBURY, CONNECTICUT.
ORLOWSKI, BOTH TABLE AND CHAIR CONSTRUCTION.
Application filed August 8, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALnnsANnnR PLUnow- SKI, a subject of the Czar of Russia, residing at lVaterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Table and Chair Construction, of which the following a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in table and chair construction.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a table provided with a plurality of shiftable chairs operatively arranged connected thereto, the chairs being normally positioned substantially beneath the table ready for instant use when desired.
A further object of the device is the provision of a hinged seat structure for tables having resilient mounting means and being shiftable to a point beneath the table when not in use, the arrangement being such as to permit certain of the elements to be disassembled and folded beneath the table when desired.
With these general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and then claimed.
In the drawings forming a part of this application and in which like designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views Figure 1 is a side elevation of the present device with two of the opposite seat members in their open operative positions, one of the same being illustrated by dotted lines in its normally retracted arrangement.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the device.
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1 with the chair members disassembled and folded.
Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view taken upon line IV-IV of Fig. 3.
' Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken upon line VV of Fig. 2.
Fig. 6 is a sectional view taken upon line VI-VI of Fig. 1.

Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 113,732.
Fig. 8 is a sectional View taken upon line VIIIVIII of Fig. 1.
Referring more in detail to the drawings, the table 10 is arranged of substantially the usual form commonly employed in restaurants and other places comprising a rectangular table top 11 mounted upon a rectangular base 12 of smaller dimensions by means of an upright standard or post 15.
The chair or seat members provided for the table each consist of a seat or bench board 14 pivotally connected to the adjacent side of the post 13 by means of centrally hinged braces 15 arranged in parallelism and having hinges 16 allowing the said braces to close upon themselves with a downward movement. The braces 15 are pivoted at their outer ends as at 17 to the board 14 while their inner ends are pivoted as at 18 with the said upright 13. Leaf springs 19 are carried by the faces of the upright 13 for engaging over the seats 14 when the braces 15 are folded and the said seats are closed substantially thereagainst, as best illustrated in Fig. 3.
Two-part hinged struts 20 are pivotally attached at their upper ends to the seat 14 as at 21 to points outwardly of the pivotal connections 17, the separate portions of the struts 20 being connected by hinges 22 adapted for closing upon themselves by an inward movement.
The lower ends of the struts 20 are provided with cylindrical pistons 23 slidably arranged within cylinders 24, the inner ends of the said pistons engaging the coil springs 25, which afford a cushioned mount for the seats 14. The opposite ends of the springs 25 may be connected to the pistons 23 and cylinders 24 whereby the parts may not become accidentally displaced. The cylinders 24 are attached to the base 12 by means of pins 26 provided with brackets 27 swivelly mounted in the said base, it being understood that the brackets of the pivoting members 17 and 21 of the seats 14 are also swivelly mounted, as best illustrated in Fig. 5 of the drawing.
The device being constructed as herein set forth, the weight of the braces 15 normally maintains the seats 14 in their retracted inclined position beneath the table top 14, it
being evident that by grasping the seat 14: the same will be readily forced outwardly, assuming its operative horizontal position ready for the reception of an occupant.
The bolts 28 of the pivotal connections 21 are removable allowing the struts 20 to be folded upon themselves and positioned upon the base 12 while the braces 15 and seats 1-1 are foldable against the standard 13 when desired, as illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawings.
A serviceable table with a plurality of accommodating seats is thus aranged in which the seats are normally positioned out of the way arranged for outward shifting for immediate use when desired.
iVhat I claim as new is 1. A device of the class described comprising a table having a top, a base, a central upright connecting the said base and top, seats arranged adjacent the said top, two-part foldable braces arranged in parallelism pivotally connecting the said seats with the adjacent sides of the upright, downwardly converging struts swivelly connected at their upper ends to the said seats, cylinders pivoted to the said base, pistons upon the lower ends of the said struts slidably ar anged within the said cylinders, and shock absorbing springs positioned between the inner ends of the said pistons and cylinders.
2. A device of the class described comprising a table having a top, a base, and a connecting upright, side seats, foldable braces pivotally connecting the said seats with the said upright, retaining leaf springs for the said braces and seats carried by the upright and adapted to engage the seats when arranged in their folded positions adjacent the said upright, struts swivelly mounted between the said base and seats, and cushioning means provided for the said struts.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature.
ALEKSANDER PLUDOXVSKI.
