ENVELOPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 521 ,760, dated June 19, 1894. Application filed February 24, 1894. Serial No. 501.448. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: 1
Be it known that I, MORGAN J. ORAMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chest Springs, county of Oambria, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Envelope or Improvement Thereon, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates especially to envelopes for mailing letters and other private matter and is not only sealed by the ordinary means but is adapted to receive the postage stamp so that it overlaps the joint or edge of the outer sealing flap the latter forming the front of the envelope and affording asurface for the address. The opposite side of the envelope is utilized for advertising orother preferred purposes.
The accompanying drawings illustrate the invention.
Figure 1 is a plan view of the envelope closed and sealed. Fig. 2 is a plan view showing the flaps all opened. and Fig. 3 is a like view showing three flaps closed and the sealing flap opened.
Like letters of reference denote corresponding parts in the difierent views.
The letter H. indicates the body of my envelope having the end flaps A and B. and the top flap 0. all provided with gummed surfaces so that they may be closed down and sealed together as in ordinary envelopes.
The flap D. I prefer to make rectangular and with smooth edges as shown, but a slight departure from this construction may be made without sacrificing the principle of the invention. The flap D. is somewhat less in width than the body of the envelope so that when folded for sealing it reaches to the place indicated by theline R. almost entirely covering the joints of the outer flaps.
The inner surface of the flap D is gummed from its edges to about the line marked g. h. z. andits outer face forms the front of the envelope and provides space for the address.
The square Z. at tne upper right hand corner of Fig. 1. marks the space for the postage stamp which when in place will overlap the.
edges of the flaps O and D at that corner and more effectually secure the envelope against surreptitious opening. The impression of the postal dating stamp T. also should be made upon the flaps G. and D. jointly, across the latters edge, for purposes of detection should the envelope be tampered with.
Having now described my invention, what I claim, and desireto secure, is
An envelope having side and end flaps and a sealing flap forming the front of the envelope which is somewhat less in width than the body of the envelope the flaps being folded so that "the sealing flap covers the joints between the remaining flaps whereby when closed only a single joint is exposed, over which the stamp may be placed.
