' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BENJAMIN HANN, OF SANTA FE, OKLAHOMA TERRITORY.
-SHlNGLE-GAGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 521,112, dated June 5, 1894. Application filed January 18, 1894. serial No. 497,260. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN HANN,a. citizen of the United States, residing at Santa F, in the county of K and Territory of Oklahoma, have invented a new and useful Shingle-Gage, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improved shingle-gage; and it has for its object the production of a device to be applied to the outer edge of a lathing-hatchet or other suitable implement to serve as a gage for the workman while laying shingles on a roof.
The invention will first be described in connection with the accompanying drawings, and then pointed out in the claim.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a lathinghatchet having my improved gage applied thereto. Fig. 2 represents ablank from which the gage is formed. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the completed gage. Fig. 4 illustrates the manner of using my shingle-gage.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the shank of the gage, which is preferably tapered, having at its lower end a rectangular bifurcated extension 13, considerably wider than the lower end of the shank. This extension is bent, on the dotted line Fig. 2, at a right angle to the shank, thus forming shoulders s on each side of the bifurcation b,.as shown. In the upper portion of the shank there is formed a series of holes a, through which the gage may be adj ustably attached to the implement.
In the drawings I have shown the gage applied to a lathing-hatchet H, having a handle h, a screw (1 being passed through one of By this means the courses of shingles can be laid perfectly true and at equal distances from each other. As the gage is, by means of holes a, capable of being adjusted at different distances from the pole of the hatchet, it will be apparent that the gage will serve to lay a course at any distance from the one last laid.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is-- In combination with a hatchet provided with a handle a shingle-gage comprising a shank having a series of vertically-arranged holes in its upper end, a bifurcated right-angled extension at its lower end, said extension being wider than the lower end of the shank, and a screw passed through one of said holes -and into the handle, the bifurcation being astride of the edge of the hatchet.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
. BENJAMIN HANN.
