CLIP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 520,553,dated May 29, 1894.
Application filed $eptember 23, 1893. Serial No. 486,266. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FISHER O. ATHERTON, acitizen of the United States, residing at the city of Bui'falo,in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Clips, of which the following is a specification. V
This invention relates more particularly to a clip for attaching the brake lever of a velocipede to the handle bar, and it has for its object to produce a strong and light clip of this kind which can be readily detached from the handle bar, in case it is desired to remove the brake lever.
In the accompanying drawingsz-Figure 1 is a front view of the clip applied to a handle bar. Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a cross section in line 33, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a detachedperspective view of the clip, showing its sections separated.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts in the several figures.
A represents the handle bar of a velocipede, and B the brake lever supported on the handle bar by my improved clip. The latter is composed of two substantially similar parts or sections 0 O which embrace opposite sides of the handle bar and which are preferably hinged together at their upper portions by a loop d, while at their lower portions they are formed with downward extensions or lugs 0 through which passesaclamping bolt f. This bolt also serves as the pivot of the brake lever. Each of the clip sections 0 consists of a single strip of sheet metal, preferably steel, which is doubled or folded upon itself at the middle and is enlarged at its bend to form a transverse eye e which receives the adjacent bar of the connecting loop 01. The portion of the doubled strip immediately below this eye is concaved to conform to the contiguous surface of the handle bar, and from the lower end of this concave portion the strip extends At the lower end of this lug, the strip is again folded or doubled inward upon itself, as shown in Fig. 3, producing four thicknesses of metal in the lug. The end portions of these redoubled portions of the two clip-sections are bent inwardly at right angles to the lugs o to form lips e. These lips abut against sides bear against the under side of the handle bar. The holes in the lugs c, for the passage of the clamping bolt, extend through the four thicknesses of the lugs. Upon tightening the screw nut of this clamping bolt, the lugs are drawn toward each other, cans ing the clip sections to firmly embrace the handle bar and securely attaching the clip thereto. As the lugs of the clip are comparatively elastic, their pressure against opposite sides of-the brake lever may be increased or diminished by tightening the screw nut to a greater or less extent, causing the brake lever to operate with more or less friction, as may be desired. The lips of of the clip sections complete the circle of the clip and prevent the clip from rocking on the handle bar. One of the clip sections is preferably provided on its inner side with a pin or projection g which enters an opening h in the handle bar, thereby effectually holding the clip against displacement on the handle bar.
When it is desired to detach the brake lever and the clip from the handle bar, the screw nut is removed from theclamping bolt and the latter is withdrawn from the lugs of the clip, when the sections of the clip can be separated and taken ofi the handle bar.
My improved clip, while especially desirable for supporting the brake lover of a velocipede, is also useful for other purposes, for instance for attaching a luggage carrier or a lantern to the handle bar or similar part of a velocipede.
I claim as my invention-= 1. A clip composed of two clamping sections, each consisting of a doubled strip of sheet metal having an eye at its rear portion and a perforated lug at its front portion, a loop connecting the eyes of the clip sections, and aclamping bolt passing through the perforated lugs of the sections, substantially as set forth.
2. A' clip, composed of two concave clamp- .ing sections each having an eye at one end ICO through the lugs thereof, substantially as set doubled portions being bent inward at an angle' to the lugs, forming lips, adapted to bear against the handle bar or other support, substantially as set forth.
Witness my hand this 21st day of August, :5
FISHER "C. ATHERTON. Witnesses:
