WITWESSES f d jm 6, @y Jaw M5 @27 il? .dttorneyi UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES R. POLLOGK, OFY MANSFIELD, OHIO.
BUCKLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 317,415, dated May 5, 1885.
' Application filed January 13, 1885. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom may concern;
Be it known that I, JAMES R. POLLOCK, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Mansfield, in the county of Richland and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buckles, of which the following is a specification. reference being had therein to the accompanying dawings.
This invention relates to buckles, and has for its objects to provide a buckle which will be simple in construction, and which will permit the web or strap of the attachment to which it is secured to be conveniently drawn through it for the purposes of adjustment in a direction opposite to the strain upon the buckle, caused by the article or articles it is to support, and which will bind upon the said web or strap by the torce ofthe strain, so as to prevent any possibility of slipping, as more fully hereinafter specified. These objects I attain by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l represents a detached perspective view of my improved buckle, showing the parts connected and a detached portion, or the lower plate of the buckle, and Fig. 2 represents a sectional view of the same, showing the buckle applied to the web or strap.
The letter A indicates the upper frame of the buckle, which is preferably constructed of sheet metal, with an open slot or space, B.
The letter G indicates the lower or suspension frame of the buckle. The lower plate is provided with a crossbar, G, at the top, having its ends extended at each side and pro vided with lugs H I, the lugs lI being straight or in the same plane as the cross-bar, while the lugs I are bent so us to form recesses K, which embrace the sides of the upper frame, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
The strap or web is passed from the rear through the upper space or slot in the upper plate over the cross bar ofthe lower plate and down through the lower portion or slot of the upper plate, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
In this improvement in buckles it is apparent that the st rain upon the lower plate, which is hooked at its lower end for its attachments, causes the parts of the buckle to bind upon the web or strap with a leverage which increases with the strain, thus preventing any possibility of the buckle slipping, while the parts, when the strain is removed, may be readily slipped upon the strap or web to permit of ready and convenient adjustment.
Having thus described my invent-ion, I cla-im and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with the upper slotted plate, of the lower plate having an extended cross-bar at the top, provided with straight and bent lugs at the end, adapted to engage the side bars ofthe upper plate between them and bind upon the web or strap, sul'istantially as specified.
In testimony whereof` I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES It. POLLOGK. Witnesses:
DAVID l?. MTLLER, WALTER S. BRADFORD.
