Description

' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
F. A. iLLINeWoETE AND A. J. ILLINGWORTH, or WESTON, Mass.
iMPnovi-:D ooo-n-FASTENING.
V Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 52,050, dated January 16, 1866. l
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, F. A. ILLINGWORTH and A. J. ILLINGWORTH, ot' Weston, in 'the' county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Door- Fastening; and we do hereby declare that'thc following is a full, clear, and exact descrip` tion lthereoii'which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming partot' this specication, in which- Figure 1 is a plan or top view ot' our invention applied toa door; Fig. 2, a detached plan or-top view ot' the same, shown in a position reverse to that shown in 'Fig. 1; Fig. 3, aidetached end view otl the same; Fig. 4, a detached plan or top view et' the same in a closed state.
Similarletters of reference indicate corresponding; parts. f
'lhis invention relates to a new and improved door-fastening;` of' that class designed for travelers, one that is extremely portable, so that it may be carried in the pocket withotauy inconvenience whatever, and capable ot' being the plate and through the slot a ot' the bar A for the claw B to turn or work upon. The outer end ot' the claw B isprovided with two spurs orpoints, ff, prigcctingt'roni it at right angles, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 4, and the slot d in the claw B is sutticiently longr so that the claw, when the rod e is at one end, g, of the slot a in the bar A, may be turned around to either side of A. 4
The device is applied as follows: In Fig. 1
'a left-hand door, (his shown Vin red, D being one side of the door-frame-agai-nst'which the door closes. The claw B 'is turnedoutward at right angles with the bar A, so that the rod e willbe at the end h of the slot a, and the spurs or 'points f j' are pressedi'nto-the side of the 4 frame D and the door closed. The barA is then shoved to the left, orn the directionindicated by the arrow l, so that the bar A will project over the edge of the door, as shown in i Fig. l, and the door will be securely fastened, so that it cannot be opened from the outer side.
I n order to unfasten the door the bar A is shoved from left to right .u ntil' the rod eis at' the end li ot' the slot a., and said'bar will not' fthen be in the wa-yof the door.
The bar A, it will be seen, is madeof taper form, so that when shoved from right to left it will bind snugly against the door.
ln applying* the device to a right-hand door the claw B. is Iturned around to the opposite. side of the bar, lasshowu in Fig. 2.
The device may be readily detached from the door-frame when the door is open, and the claw B is then turned around iu a longitudinal position with bar A and shoved inward, so that the outer part. of the, clawmay tit into slot b, as shown in Fig. 4.. The device is then in compact form, and may be carried in the vest-pocket without anyiinconvenence. Thus a very portable and secure door-fastening is ob` tained, and one' which may be manufactured at a trifling?,l cost.
Having thus described our invention, we claim'ias new and desire to secure by Letters Y Patent- A portable door-fastening composed of fthe slotted har A and the adjustable claw B, .con-
s'tructed and arranged' substantially in the ni anner as and for the purpose l herein set forth.
F. A. ILLINGWORTH..
A. J. iLLlNGwQltTH. 'l Witnesses: I l I .FRANCIS F. GIBBs, D. E. Porti.
